Taft's Speech at Chicago.
Democratic and disaffected Re
publican papers and politicians
are becoming esuted by their own
interpretation of a pirt of the
President's recent speech nl Clncu-
"O.
These people are trying to make
it appear that Mr Taft is pro
phesying iiis iran defeat, when the
fact of the matter is that ho is
making a simple statement of fact
;is to uh.it "some people think"
and then expressing his own fell
ings in regard to the same Mr.
Taft is not making boasltul pre
dictions as to the success of his
party this year nor does lie over
indulge in such expressions at any
tune.
Following is the extract from
his Chicago address referred to-
"Some people think the Repub
lican party is at a crisis with
reference to ts continuance in
the guidance of the nation
"I hope that the people have
only chatcncd us in an off-year,
in order that w e may be better
hereafter.
. "I hope they have no intention
of shifting the burdens of present
problems from shoulders fitted to
carry them to successful solution
to those untried which have new
theories we do not believe the
people believe in
"However, if they desire a
cliango wc shall loyally support!
the new government, with the
hope it will benefit the country,
but with the consolation that, if
after one trial, the people think
they ought to go back to the old
party that has served them so
well, they will do so "
Joseph Pulitzer Dies.
Joseph Pulitzer, owner of the
New York World and the St.
Louis Post-Dispatch, died Sunday
on board his yacht in the harbor
nt Charleston, S C.
Joseph Pulitzer was a remark
able man in many respects. He
was born m Hungary in 1847- re

vate tutors, but had no money.
He came to America in 1864 and
served in the Union Army After
the war he went to St. Louts,
where he worked as a waiter in a
restaurant. He was later given a
place as reporter on the Westhchc
Post, a German daily After that
his rise was rapid until ho bought
the St. Lotus Dispatch and com
bined it with the St. Louis Post
He studied law, was admitted to
practice, and was elected to the
State legislature. He was a mem
ber of the i onstitutional conven
tion in 1879. In the early eighties
he went to New York and bought
tho world. The Woild was the
first and greatest of the so called
yellow journals.
Joseph Pulitzer was stricken
blind about 22 vears ago, but
continued up to the time of his
death to do much newspaper
work.
To the Young Man.
The writer wonders if a few
pungent words of advice from a
man who is jet young but who
has had opportunit) to observe
many things, would have any ef
fect on the minds of his young
men readers. Or do you, boys,
belong to the class of humanity
who arc like the brutes and can
loom only by experience? Do you
have to go through "the Hint mill"
