THE TRIBUNE PubliHlied Every Krldny HV THE TRIBUNE PRINTING CO. A. B. Kkam.k', Managing Editor. The depositions in tlie Ctmlwell libel snitiimke both interesting and iiiHtructivc rending. Coh Moses Wetmoru, the giant trust slayer linn once more surrendered to the climnm of the lady on tht silver dollar. Since moving into the Uttegrovc building on the ground floor theTitniUNKliiis quarters Hecond to no paper in the county for appearance and convenience. Stop in und nee our new office- when pawing. Tha democratic legislature elected in 1898 passed the St. Louis Street Railway Consolidation bill, permitting the organiza tion of the Transitcompnuy, the most gigan tic trust in Missouri. It now appears from the testimony in the Cnrdwell libel suit that the Htreet railwnyH handed $(5,000 to the Democratic State committee to help elect this legislature. Sec any connection? The Kepuhlicau editors convention lield at St. Joseph last month was attended from every quarter of the Stte. The con vention watt harmonious ami .enthusiastic. The Kepublicau editors of Missouri beliove that the time bus come when the State can be carried for the Republicans, and they am getting together in splendid shape to ac complish that great end at the next election. Prominent Democrats in Missouri have recently stated that large cash contributions were made to the Democratic state commit tec's fund by interested corporations, as a preliminary to the passage of the transit company's bill, the stock yards bill and the race track pool-selling bill, while the tele phone company and brewers are reported to have made similar payments to prevent leg islation. These assertions come entirely from Democratic legislators or officials, and from u remarkable inside view of how the Btato of Missouri is governed. (!. D. Itecently Mr. Sam Cook, Secretary of State, wrote a letter to the St. Louis Re public rellecting on the character of W. O Cardwell, a Democrat and member of the legislature in 181)8 !)!. Mr. Cardwell is now president of a Democratic Club in Kan bus Citv, and in a recent speech accused the Democratic State Committee of selling the legislature to tuu corporations in advance for compaign contributions. Mr. Cook's letter was in reply to this charge. Mr. Cardwell has now sued the Republic for $00,000 for libel and is proceeding to take the depositions ol Uemocratic leaders to prove the truthfulness of his charges of cor- tuption. Frank J Walsh, who is Cardwell's at torney in the latter libel suit against the He public is one ( f the ablest lawyers in Missou ri, and is himself a member of the Demo emtio State Committee. of of tl WARNER CASE REVERSED. CHAIRMAN AKINS' SPEACH. Hon. T. ). Akins, Chairman, of the Republican State Committee, was one of the speakers at the recent editorial conven tion at St. Joseph, and said in part: Mr. l'resitlcnt and Members of tho Repul licau l'rcss Association of Missouri : I desire to express my sincere appreci ation of the distinction shown me by your Committee on Program. I accept this com pliment, not as personal, but as an honor to thcorg.-ihizcd party of the state, which I, in some meusure have the honor to represent. It is fitting and proper that this, the drat meeting of this association should lie held in this beautiful and progressive city. know of no more fitting illustration of the growth and development of our common country under the system of government taught ami ad ministered by the Republican than the marvelous growth and develoii- mcnt of this city. Within comparatively a short period of years you have sprung up as if by magic, from a country town to the third city in the state, with a population of more than one hundred thousand. What has transpired in St. Joseph has, in a measure, been true of the whole country. Situated as you are, far toward the northwestern boundary of the state, near enough to our sister state of Iowa to catch a refreshing breeze every morning from a statu whose interest is pre sided over by that great teacher of Ameri can politics, Governor Leslie M. Shaw, whom every Missourinn love and honors. A state whose chief executive is broad and patriotic enough to see that every citi- i7.en of the statu has the right to cast one vote for the candidates of his choice and that their votes are counted as cast. A state that does not use the police force in the metropolitan cities to control elections. "With a close neighbor like this no wonder we are welcomed to this city by a Rcpuhli can Mayor, and received by a city whose crown is beauty and whose creed is hospital sty- Turning your eyes toward the sunset, your vision rests upon our western neighbor, the State of Kansas. A state made famous in former years largely through the efforts of one of her representatives in the United States Senate, who ranked as one of the lirst orators of the country' but whoso fame as a state somewhat suffered during the days of Populism, and receded from a "star of thu first magnitude" to tallow candles like "Soekless Simpson" and "Mary Lease," but who has regained much of her former glory under the leadership of iiinn like Sena tor Ralph llurtou and our brilliant and gifted friend, J. IC. Ciibbsiuon. l ins is a statu mat always has a sensa tion in store for the country, and I would ho gratillcd if Missouri would copy her last scu nation. If St. Joseph grows a little mount onous, and thu hoys want to have a littlu fun with each other, just let. them catch a whiff of thu ICansas breeze and the entertainment is on. Itut thou little diversions are always for tlioir own amusement, and they love each other better after they have had some fun. I am highly gratified with thu personnel or this convention. "The Republican vote makers of the state are here. They are here for business and thev mean business. I can not help but pity the opposition when these "Knights of thu Quill" return to their homes filled with enthusiasm, and lire weekly broad-sides into thu somewhat confused ranks of the opposition. This meeting means the redemption of tho State of Missouri. Wo nre here to organize our forces nd pre pare a plan of campaign. "We make no concealment of our purposes. "Wo serve notice now that the battle is on, and will bu waged all along the line. All future cam paigns in this state must bu forceful and ag gressive. Our army is too large for a still hunt. Our cause is the cause of good government, state and national. It means the prosperity of the' whole people. Its watchword is Progress. Our "slogan" is equal rights to all citizens of tho state. "Wc stand for reforms in state government. For equality in the matter of taxation. For free ballot, and fair count of the ballots as cast.
