Tho Mayor called nt tho TRIBUNE office last Friday and informed us, that, in so far aa tho authority of tho city administration goes, city marshall Shackelford is not re quired to be on duty both day and night as stated in tho Tribune last week. The mayor docs not think it is necessary to have tho mar shal on duty during tho day timo. The marshal is required by tho city administration to work nights only. In tho day timo the city 14 so peaceful and the citizens so law J abiding that there is no need of a police officer. Mr. Chadwlck has been mayor of the city for tho greater portion of tho past twenty -Dvo) years, and attributes tho fact to hiH policy of rigid economy. Ho outfit to know what tho people want and probably docs know. Tho Tri bune thought, and docs think, Montgomery should have a polico officer on duty both day and night. Tho Mayor said that in the mat ter of lighting perhaps a better service in the business portion of the city would be advisable, but that no more lights could be af forded at present. Perhaps that's so. Montgomery's citizens may be too poor to pay enough taxes to properly light the city but we hardly think it-possible. Elopers Return Home.
