The Garfield board of auditors held a meeting this morning and agreed to meet daily at 9 o clock a. m. until all claims are disposed of. All case will be examined and aiscussed before any action is taken upon any for final dis position. SANITARY MUSEUM. Surgeon General Wales, who has charge ot the National museum of Hygiene, recently authorized by act of Congress, is preparing to pen the museum tor the Decent oi tne puonc. He will probablv cause the establish ment of a national exposition upon sanitary and hygienic subjects, next year. A large number of very valu able contributions were recently made, including works upon hygiene, from Dr. A. N. Bell, of New York, ate past assistant surgeon of the United States army. A large collection of illustrated food products of the world, is exhibited at the centennial, and a fine collection illustrative of perfect and defective sewerage, has beeu pre sented by Prof. Bond. Melville's storv. Chief Eugineer Melville contined, before the Jeannette court, this morn ing, his story of the return. He de scribed the council of war held by DeLong, Chipp and himeelr, on the floe where the Jeannette went down before starting for the New Siberian islaud, at which a sailor translated a German publication about these isl ands for their information. At this council Chipps and Melville told De Long that the ice pack being all alive between the floe and the islaud they could not carry the boats and prisoners across. star-route scandal. Frank H. Pelham, went to the police court and ws placed under $2,o()0 bonds to ap pear when wanted, bhaw says that he has been in Virginia for the past month on business, while detectives have gone as far north as Massachu setts in search of him. MAY LOSE HIS SEAT. It is stated that Congressman-Elect O'Hara of the Second North Carolina district, was born in Canada, and has never taken out naturalization papers, and therefore is not eligible to a seat Louisville, Nov. 11. At the Homeopathy dispensary, yesterday, a singular operation was erformed. A colored man, named Win. Tell, was suffering from a large tumor growing on his face and neck. The surgeons attempted before undertaking the op eration for its removal with the knife, to place the subject under the influ ence of ether and other anesthetics, but the patient's system refused the influence of the strongest applications. Dr. A. G. Smith, one f the surgeons of the dispensary , attempted mesmeric influence on Tell, which wa3 speedily effected, the patient remaining in sensible to pain, when a pin was stucck uearly through his hand. The operation for removal of the tumor began at 9:30 a. m., aud owing to its size and the care taken was not concluded until 11 o'clock, during which time an incision was made. Tell was kept under une influence of drugs all the time. When the ojera tion had been completed the patient stated that he was conscious of all that was said aud done, but felt no pain whatever. The operation which was performed by Drs- Smith aud Keep- ler, of the dispensary staff, is causing much comment in medical circles, as an improvement on, the use of anes thetics. Tell is doing finely. NOT DONE YET. The directors of the Nickel Plate meet in New York, next Tuesday, when two of the pres ent board will retire. General Deve- reaux and Judge Burke take their places. The owners of the controlling interest are pleased with the existing force of employes. A railway official of one of the roads. whose position gives weight to his opinion, expresses the belief that the Nickel Plate Central has not been pur chased by, or for, individuals, but by the New York Central. Three Times as Much. Boston, Nov. 11. In the supreme court, to-day, the case of Mrs. Ella Home vs. Charles R. Home, Jr., for increase of alimony, came up. New York, Nov. 11. Thurlow Weed is gradually failing. Ottawa, Nov. 11. It has been de cided that in the case of Richards, convicted of the murder of a fellow emigrant in July, 1881, in the eastern township, the law must take its course. The execution is fixed for the 24th inst. An order in council has been passed providing for a reduction of the rate of tolls on crude gypsum passing east through the Well and canal, and west tbrough St. Lawrence canals, to five cents per ton. The company which applied to par liament last year for ? charter to build a bridge across the Niagara river somewhere between Lewiston and the falls has given notice of its intention to renew the application next season. Better Stop It Up. New York, Nov. 11. There was almost another diaster in the Har lem tunnel yesterday. A3 the New Haven train thai leaves Mt. Vernon at 8:17 a. m., was passing through the main tunnel it was stopped at about Eighty-second street. The rear brakeman ran back and, stopped a train a few blocks in the rear, when some person said . "All right," and the train started again. The con ductor of the first train sent another brakeman back and he stopped the train in the rear, within 100 feet of the one ahead ot it. The passengers were much excited. The Election of Poole. Raleigh, N. C, Nov. 11. The election of Poole, republican, in the First district is conceded by the dem ocrats, i he election in the the Fifth district is still in doubt. Bennett, denocrat, for congressman-at-Iarge, is coufidentlv claimed bv the democrats by one thousand or more majority. It Don't Pay. Pittsburg, Nov. 11. Clarence B. Gibson, an old postoffice employe in this city, was sentenced to three years in the peuitentiaty, this afternoon, for robbing the mails. The French Socialists. Lyons, Nov. 11. Placards have been posted on the walls of the princi pal buildings and on the bulletin boards, calling for another socialist demonstration here. The authorities are unable to discover who placed the placards, so secretly has the work been done, but full notice has been given and it is probable the demonstration will take place. The police are on the alert and will prevent, if possible, any outbreak or tendency to become unruly. The military continue in the barracks ready to be called on at any moment. It is not likely the anarch ists will find so smooth sailing as be fore, if they attempt to disturb the peace of the city aud nation. The Gag Rule Carried. Loudon, Nov. 11. Upou division in a debate on the cloture rule, five members of the liberal party recorded votes against the government, but none of the conservatives were found voting in the majority in favor of the gag rule. Of the home rulers, thirty three voted in favor of the cloture and the remainder abstained from voting. Mr. James Ranken Young, of Philadelphia, has been selected to succeed Mr. MiUiken, as chief clerk of the department of justice. Might as Well Have Stayed. Washington, Nov. 11. A dispatch was received at the execative mansion to-day, announcing that the president will leave for Washingeon this afternoon. Secretary Chandler is also expected to arrive to night. Secretary Lincoln will return on Monday next. Illinois' Political Status. Chicago, Nov. 11. The history of poli tics iu the state does not furnish a parallel to the present election in the difficulty ex perienced in getting returns of official maj orities from ninety four districts of the one hundred and two. Careful estimates of the other eight give Smith, republican, for state treasurer ,oWo majority, and nu election is considered assured. The result on superintendent -of public instruction is still in doubt, with the chances in favor of liaab, democrat. J , Nov. 11 - lieo. G. Ben nett, the bank robber, was his morning sentenced to five years in the state prisoa and costs, for robbing the National State bank, in this city. F Porter, a rich hanker ia Utica, N.
