THE SEP AT J A WEEKLY BAZOO, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1884.
FOR FARMERS. MONSTERS. An apple tree in Mercer county, Ky., has borne fruit for sixty seasone without a failing. Five feet from the ground its trunk is 10 feet 9 inches in circumference. STRAWBERRIES. A strawberry measuring three and a half inches one way by four the other, was picked from a Hawthorn, FJa , patch a few days since. The Western Farmer tells the story. HORSES. There has been no time since the war when horses have sold for better advantage of good horses over com mon ones been mere apparent. City markets are not heavily supplied on account of the demand for horses on the farm at this season of the year. RADISHES. Radishes may be had until late in the season. The best mode of grow ing them is to put plenty of wood ashes on the location, make the soil fine and endeavor to have them grow as quickly as possible, which makes them crisp and tender. MELONS. The melon growers of Georgia have formed a pool for the sale of their products with headquarters at Atlan ta. No melons will be shipped until a market has been found tor them. Eight thousand car loads were sent north last year. MILK FEVER. Milk fever does not usually attack the cows that give moderate yields of milk. A good butter cow is not al ways a deep milker, the yield of but ter depending more upon the richness of the milk rather than the quantity. CLUBS. A good example is placed before farmers' clubs by the members of the Macon county, JS". C, Farmers' club, who enter into competition among themselves in growing corn and other .crops. They also meet and give tneir experience, the result being that all are benefitted. PEARS. Pears grafted on apples usually thrive wonderfully for a few years. The grafts are short lived, however, and enly two or three limb3 of apple top should therefore be set to pears. Pears thus grown are commonly very large It is the practice of some fruit rowers to raise pears in this manner for fairs. BIRDS. If the birds are stealing' your cher ries, hang several old tin cans, in which you have bought canned fruits, in the trees, and hang a small stone or piece oi metal m .tne can as a itoDgue, suspending it so the breeze will agitate it. The unusual and un expected noise will scare any intrud era. Exercise For Girls. Several daily papers have recently discussed a letter from Mr. fl. P. Dunn, on the use and abuse of gymnastics for young women. The letter, as might be expected, turns attention to the evils of excessive gymnastic training. A3 violent exercise produces bad results on weak youths, and as girls are, on the average, weaker than young men, it is natural to suppose that injuries to health after gymnastic training may be commoner amongst females than amongst males ; and experience shows this to be the case. No doubt the best kind of physical training in youth is voluntary exercise, either in play- he pou replied nonchalantly, "193 bottom of our pile, too, I give up. nds and went up to the bridge Sn did mv rri. ftnt Jim ' h 5Bvl L ! l J X J "I uesiue Luc uupi-aiu. The result was he sold a piece of land in Iowa and I took some of my wifes money. We went down est and bought a car load of oil and a lot of empties and had the whole lot billed as empty barrels. 'Bout a week after the oil was due we gave out that we are about to strike it and had sent for a car load of empty oil barrels to fill. The load came and was full to the roof of the car, the top barrels only being empty. There was a big ex citement in that neighborhood, but no one suspected what we were at. So that night my pard an two hired men we'd let int j the secret, worked j like beavers, pouring that car load of oil down the hole. As the Chester, on which he was a passenger, neared the coast the other day, the usual excitement in the mat ter of pools on the pilot was gotton up. Wagei s were laid on the hour he would be sighted, the side of the vessel he would climb up, the num ber of his boat and the other etceteras customary on such occasions. Pin ally, as the pilot boat appeared, a speck in the distance, the list was ex hausted. Pi ice was suddenly struck witn a brilliant idea. He waited un til the small boat was lowered and the pilot seated in the sternsheets making for the Chester. Knowing that pilots in general are inclined to obesity, and observing that this pilot in particular seemed to be of Falstaf- fian proportions. Price shouted to an Englishman of sporting proclivities, "111 lay vou a sovereign that that pilot tips the scale at two hundred.' "Done! exclaimed the Britisher. Then they waited anxiously for the appearance of the subject of the bet. When he clambered over the side, puffing like a porpoise. Price sized up his man, and concluded he had a sure thing. Pilots are never surprised at ne odd questions oi incoming passen gers (kno win their betting pro pensity), so when his weitbt was asked ly dozen voices altogether, admitted tney nd been visiting Chinamen, and that a doctor named Reynolds, w;th whom they had been intimate, gave them chloroform. A number of Chinamen have been ar rested, and about twenty-five more are said to be implicated. The girls were sent to the Bridewell in default of SI 00 fine. Reynolds is looked up on as a reputable physician in the neighborhood where he . practices. The girls told stories against one an other in girl fashion, and their narra tives showed a fearful depravity. Done a Well. "Pm discouraged, I am," said a tired and seedy-looking passenger, as he dropped into a seat and pulled his hat down over his eyes." "What's the matter? Haven't you done well out west?" "Done well? Yes, we did a well, if that's what you mean." "Explain yourself." cWhy, my partner and me had a couple of thousand ahead, when we struck a plare out in Southwestern Missouri wh rs there were indications of oil.
