There are two school directors io be
elected this spring, but so far no one
has announced as a candidate. Women
are now eligible to serve on the board
and we would like to see at least one
of the new directors a woman. Monett
has many intelligent women, intensely
interested in the welfare of our young
people and we suggest that the Parent
Teacher Association select one from
their number and see that she is elect-
led. There is a movement for better
schools all over the state and Monett
should select worthy successors to our
retiring directors, John Salzer and
George J. C. Wilhelm, who have serv
ed in this capacity faithfully for the
oast fifteen and twelve years re-
respectively.

Since the government has removed
restrictions against sending out sample
copies of newspapers, The Times has
renewed its practice of sending out
extra papers each week, with grati
fying results in, new subscriptions. To
see the Times is to want to get it
regularly. All the home news and
timely advertising by local merchants
is cheap at 10 cents a week for the
daily or 12 & cents a month for the
weekly and our people know a bargain
when they see it.

In accordance with our usual custom
The Times will publish announcements
for candidates for school directors free
of charge. A director receives no com
pensation for many hours work and
responsibility and we feel that an
applicant for that office should receive
every consideration before and after
his election.

We the undersigned members of the
Monett Board of Education, who are
retiring after fifteen years of service
as directors of the Monett schools;
feel it our duty to call the attention
of the voters to the fact; that our
levies for school purposes heretofore
have not been sufficient to properly
carry on the growing work that is de
manded by the State Board of Edu
cation and the patrons of this Dislrict,
while the demands for new courses,
more teachers and increased facilities
come from year to- year, the levies
have remained the same and under the
new ruling of taxation the assessed
valuation has decreased; which, under
the former levies, would not be enough
to maintain the required school term,
and pay the teachers a living wage,
and under the law the school Board
is not allowed to make contracts for
which the money is not' provided. It
can readily be seen that under these
conditions, the Directors hands are
tied and the result isjunderpaid teach
ers and lack of proper equipment to
maintain a first class school.
The levies this year are arranged so
as to meet these conditions and give
the new Board ample means to carry
on the work in a proper manner, and
our appeal is to the voters to heartily
support these levies by "voting for
every one of them. They are all
reasonable, and will help to put our
schools on a proper working basis.
, Respectfully, . ;
John Salzer,
- Geo. J. C. Wilhelm. 23t8

Why We Should Build Now
Monett is just ahead of a building and re
pairing boom. There is an urgent demand
for homes. K . ;";v.,, ... V''V,
The growth of our fair city will be hindered
unless more homes are built and there are
strong economic reasons for building now.
To The Investor: You cannot make a
safer investment than building in Monett.
To The Renter: Better be thinking about
owning your home, before the order is
given' "You'll have to move I've sold the
place." ,
Yea, own the home for your children's
sake.
