CAPITAL HIGRWAY ONLY FEASIBLE ROUTE I Apple orchards, as fine .as; he sees anywhere, peach, orchards, j'Etrawber ry fields, grape vineyards, wheat -j. iickis, cnicxen randies, dairy herds in fact a diversity of crops and ani mals that is pleasing to the eye and restful to the mind. Nov.- Springfield, which will you choose?- Neutral at a- very' recent date were not looked upon with much favor. Look over the propositions. One of them ha3 merit. One of them wili do you good. Which one? After we leave Monett we connect at Sei'gman with two Arkansas roads one to Fort Smith through the apple orchards of the world in Benton and Washington counties, one to Lit tle Rock via Eureka Springs. We serve a population of C,000 from Mo nett to Seligman, a distance of thirty three miles. The direct line booster dwell upon "ine uzarKS' ana tnen they want a road that wilt barely touch the Ozarks on the extreme west side and wander off into Oklahoma. By building the road on the Monett route it will reach the heart of the 6zark Playgrounds and reach both Arkansas and Okla homa. Build a road from Springfield to Seligman and Monett to Seneca and it reaches every foot of the Ozarks. That 13 where touri3t3 are going into "The Ozark Playgrounds The Land of a Million Smiles." Build a road so they can get there. Why should Jasper county, have all the roads? Shall they have all their byways concreted and their alleys paved before 75 per cent of the state has a single state road? They have been getting all the state aid, federal aid and federal machinery. Why should Springfield help them continue the program? Shall Missouri build her primary highways to accomodate the Lakes to the Gulf or Trans-Continental tourists or the population of Missouri who pay the taxes? , THE TIMES WANT ADS J HOUSES FOR RENT FOR' RENT: One fjve room apart ment in Maple Terrace, with or with out garage, by Dr. Trumbower. 30tf ROOMS FOR RENT FOR RENT: Two furnished room3 for light housekeeping: no children. 312 Frisco avenue. 7916 FOR RENT: Rooms, with board if desired. 501 Fourth street phone 437-J. 7Stf FOR RENT: Furnished rooms. ' 79tf DECORATION DAY Monett and the other towns along the proposed Capital Highway from Springfield to Monett, to Seligman and Seneca, contend the only feasible route for the Southwest Missouri state primary road is through the territory outlined by the Capital Highway Commission. ' The Springfield-Joplin combination, which endorses an "airline" from Springfield to Joplin, is working for a primary road, which leaves Spring field and runs fifty-seven miles before it reaches a town. Along this route there is no population, no telephone connection, no garages, nothing for the traveling public. This road, said to be fostered by politicians, would be used for a race track and not for a public road to benefit Missourians, as the law re quires that the primary highway to be on a highway that has been desig nated by this state. This is the only highway 'that could be built between Springfield and Joplin. The proposed Mount Vernon road run3 south and below Carthage, turns north six miles, back into Carthage. We do not believe that a road will be built twelve miles just to reach Mount Vernon. The Mount Vernon road does not reach Joplin direct. Now for the Monett route which runs fifty miles south from Spring field. This serves a population -of 18,000. Small a? Monett is, we have a suburb that has as much population as the entire fifty-seven miles from Springfield to CJarthage. What does the tourist see as he travels from Springfield to Monett? Mil 'VrJIfH&rq-n T-TI-' I"1 - fr.ia--TlfciifrWhf n'iiV.,a Decoration Day is no longer ob served at Monett with programs and speeches as in former days, but it is a sacred day in the hearts of the citizens, nevertheless. On this day memory of loved ones who have left this world is uppermost in the winds and hearts and expres sion of tender remembrance is made in covering their grave.3 with flowers. From early morning until evening, the cemeteries are visited by friends and relatives of the deceased and hearts are made more tender and present home ties are drawn closer by the an nual observance of Decoration Day. , On this day graves of soldiers who have defended our flag are decor ated to show a nation's gratitude. May it not be that , home buildine has increased so rapidly of late be cause nearly everybody put up has garage the year before, as the Wash ington Post suggests? Kansas City Journal. We cannot say to Monett, "You need a soldier," as long as they have Mrs. .Unida Soldier to sing their booster songs.
