Harry and the Pictures. The Public School Art Socie t uf Chicago, the object of whicb is to place good copies of famous pictures id the school rooms of the so-called "slum districts," ban recent i been much ebcourageu ai d gratified iiyitbe appreciation of an eleven year old, Iiish lad. .Little Larry, the Json of a ii.ird working wi'iow. was very much vexed when on, on mov ing from one dreary tenement to another, be found that be should be, obliged to leave the school that he bad alwas attended. He protested when his old principal (old him be should have to go to t'e scbool in his preseol dis trict; but being assured there was no help for it, be entered the new school, where for sev eral days be sat in a listless tloom. vverv trying to bis teacher. tLarry," she said at last, alter many vain efforts to in terest, him in his studies, "what is the matter? Are you sick?" 'iYes.nma'am, sure 'tis that I .am ill's that, dreary here be iween these walls. I'm wearyin' ilor me old school.". iBut you vwere 'between walls' there." ".Yes, ma'am, but the beanti jjul.pictures we had there ma'ma, ihey.made the hours bright." .The teacher . glanced at the mionotonus white . walls of her acboolroom, - broken only by a large, undecorative blackboard. and a wave ot sympathy came uver her ifor the beauty-loving ipupil. lPerhaps. if you don't like it ibare, the hoard of education will ivi.ve ,you a transfer ' back to your old-school.' she.said more, by vway of pleasantry than witb .any serious thought of bis ap plying to the board. iJBut the wor.dsank into iLarry's mind, and the next day being Satur day, a -small boy, whose-sbabby coat was buttoned self-respect ingly and .whose freckled face was shining from an unwonted scouring, trudged id own the tedious way from the stock yards. district to the center of ihe city, .a distance of -some seven miles, to the rooms of the board of education, where, after some delay., he was received by a clerk. He , manfully stated bis errand, and the matter was quickly taken up by those in authority. When, proudly holding the precious transfer slip, be started homeward, a teacher, who had been quietly listening to bis plea, stopped bic with a ques tioo.. t 'Did you walk .all the long way down here for the trans fer?" "Yes, ma'am. Sure my mother has not the money for car rides." "You must have taissed the pictures very much?"' "Yes, ma'am; the pictures on the walls make a difference the like of day and night.'' The teacher reported the in cident and these words to tbe Public Scbool Art Society, and an enthusiastic young woman member said, glowingly, "This one experience repays us for all our work, and makes future effort seem more than worth while, and now we must see that all the other little Larrya have pictures on their school walls." Bert West and family left Thursday , for Kansas City to make that their home. Result of Year of Republican Domina tes. The result of unrestricted re- public i u domination of the country tor twelve years past and of the Roosevelt regime which people are supposed to admire seems to be shown ii tbe fact that while this con gress has been exceedingly economical in appropriations for the public good, 'he eud of the fisc.il year will show a treasury deficit of about $60,. 000,000. Some years ago when after a democratic administration there was a large icrplus in tbe treasury and men were saying tbat a surplus was an invitation to extravagance, a republican statesman said that "it was easier to handle a surplus than a deficit. Perhaps that cnay have been tbe tepublican idea at tbat time, but at present the deficit is very apparent, and if one half of tbe appropriation bills which President Kooe vett has urged upon congress bad been passen, tbe deficit would not be f 00.-000,000, but $100,000,000. Een at that it has not been a stingy congress. After having wound up tbe almost twelve years of republi can power and authority, and five years of personal domina tion of the United States gov ernment, President Roosevelt faces tbe electorate of tbe ca tion witb a sixty million dollar deficit in tbe treasury and a commercial depression which has affected every industrial en terprise in tbe land. Never be fore have there been more work ing men out of employment than there are today under tbe benefit rule of Rooseveltism and republicanism. It is said upon good authority tbat there are more than 200,000 people in Chicago who without woric and the most cruel and most pitiful object in tbe world is the man who is willing to work, who needs work and who needs tbe wages tbat accompany tbat work, and yet cannot get a j b. When condition not neirly as bad as this occurred in 1893 it was charged to tbe democrats who bad been in power scarcely one year. This time tbe repub lican party has been in abso lutely unrestricted power since 1896, and yet it is said tbat re publican policies and republican legislation have had nothing to do with it. This is a republican congress approaching its end, not one single thing is being done to correct tbe evils tbat have brought on the bard times from which tbe people suffer. Quincy Journal. Most people laugh, not wben they want to, but wben people think they ought. A man has so many enemies you don't dare say anything good about him. There are oot many men who think their wives have any sense in money matters. There are times in every man's life wben tbe way to earn bis friendship and gratitude is to ask him no questions. Atchison (Kas.) Globe. Tillman soould feel vindi cated. In his address here four years ago be said tbat iuler- marrlage between whites and blacks as a salutioo of tbe race problem would be advanced as a solution of tbe race problem would be advanced as a result of northern fanaticism. Now we have tbe spectacle of whites and blacks at a dinner in New York where this method was suggested and agreed to by the men and women of both races. True most of tbe whites are settlement workers and enthu siasts who dream of the father hood of God and the brother hood ot man. but their extreme Ideas are abhorrent to thought ful men and women of both races.
