THE VIltGlNIA CONVENTION.
Tlio Convention of Ihc Virginia Itead-
juMcrs was a long nml rather noisy
affair, but is had all tlio appearance of
rcprctcntlng a fresh vigorous political
niorutuent. Tlio superabundant flow
of orator' was a proof of the presence
of ninny young men now to such bodies
and eager to make a reputation. In the
earnest content orer the nominations
thero wcru signs of nn entire nbsonce
of machlno tnanngeinont, anil I ml lea
Hons of strong conlldenco In tlio success
of the movement. Men do not si nig

ticket unless they believe that ticket
has a cood prospect of winning. Tlio
platform wo cannot commend. It is
Udious nml platitudinous collections
of resolutions which might ndvantu
gcouslybo boiled down to half the
compass they occupy.
The real platform of tlio convention
is, however, the admirably compact
nnd pointed speech of Senator Muhone
Evenbody who Is in favor of a free
ballot and ordorly, economical govern
tnent in tlio South must approve his
torso statement ot principles. In
Virginia convention Mahono's loot
on his native heath, and ho shows to
far better advantage as nn orator and
Fugacious lender than lie was able to
do recently in the new field of the
Senate Chamber. He was wise, how
eror, in not accepting tlio nomination
for Governor. lie lias now a position
which enables him to ntd tha good
work of breaking down nourbon rule
throughout the South whereas, if he
should (cava tlio Senato for the Exe
cutive! Chair of Virginia, his intltmce
would be limited to his own State.
Of the nominees of tho Convention!
little is known here In tho North, ex
cept Mr. Lewis who takes tho second
place on the ticket, and who was form
el ry a Republican member of tho United
States Senato. Tho candldato for
Governor is a popular young journalist
and orator. The ticket is evidently
made up with a viw of securing Re
publican support. New York Tribune

Members were present from nearly nil
the whent-gro.ving districts in tho Unl-

prlng wheat lavorablo in every county
except one woathcr dry.
Minnesota No winter wheat; thirty
counties report spring wheat all tho

Iowa I.lttlo or no winter wheat

Kansas Half a crop of winter wheat

Michigan No spring sown; wintor

Indiana Tlio snmo discouragements

The friends of Mr. Conkllng nro
striking out wildly nnd nlmlcsly on h
behalf. They assume that ho has been
badly used by some person or persons
unknown in New York; that the refusal
of the Legislature to reelect him is an
piety; and that ho and no other person
has a divmo right to sit as Senator for
tho term expiring March 4, 1685
Now, what dots a calm nnd senslbl
survey of tho situation show? Simply
that Mr. Conkllng tcturncd his com
mission to tho power which gavo It, bo
cause ha could not consent to hold
longer on tho terms originally agreed
upon. Ho asks for another commlss
inn on a different basis, and invites
Republican Legislature to join with
him In a war upon tho recognised
chief of tlio Republican party. Is
any wonder that a majority of tho
publicans in tho Legislature draw back
from this uninviting prospect P Thoy
cannot go with Mr. Conkliug or any'
body clso into tho opposition. He has
acted tho part of nn honorable man
in annulling his former contract. Hut
ho cannot blamo bis Legislature if it
refuses to join with him in another on

town on last Monday morning that Al.
Angel, a promlnont farmer of Clark
township, had been shot and sovcroly
wounded, on the night befure. There
wero so many reports, many of which
conflicted, that It was almost Impossi
ble to learn the true facts in the case,
but by diligent inquiry, we aro enabled
to lay tho following particulars beforo
our readers:
It seems that a man by tho name of
Uhinchcimor had been working for Mr.
Angell slnco last winter, nnd that two or
111160 weeks ago he cither quit or wns
discharged. On Sunday afternoon ho
camo buck and asked Mr Angel to again
employ him. Doing told thnt a hand
was not wanted now, ho stayed around
the house until late in the evening, whon
Mr. Angel went to his feed lots, about
two hundred yards from tlio house, to
feed his cattle. Hhinebeimer followed
him, and, while ho was busy feeding, ho
slipped up bohlnd him nnd shot him in
the back of the head, and then fired four
moro shots at him, two of which took
effect in tho head and two In tha arms.
Ho then caughla fino moro belonging
to Mr. Angell nnd wont to the houso nnd
told Mrs. A. that ho had shot her hus
band down at tho feed lots, and that she
had bettor havo him brought to tho houso
Ho thon mounted the horso and rodo
nwny, Somo reports say that ho stop
ped at two or thrco houses nnd told that
ho had shot Angell, nnd had takon $250
out of liU pocAets nnd proposed to get
away if his could.
The Sheriff immediately started In
pursuit, and ho was captured near Clar-
luila, Iowa, and brought back to Atch

what ho deserves hung to tho nearest
