ter than Mr. IWdcrly. Organized
labor has no authority which thcindivi
dual does not possess. Kvcry labor un
ion must realize this. Its appeal is nut ,
to lorec, but to the intelligent sympathy
pi all classes.
That appeal is never in vain. There
are hundreds in every rank of life an
xious to hasten the good day when
wages will be high enough to give to
jeytry man and to every family caie,
comfort and peace.
That day is not hastened by strikes.
It is delayed by disorder. Every at
tempt at iniimidatioH, every misplaced
switch, every injured engine, alienate?
sympathy and support.
This some of tho strikers refuse to
see. They Lave entirely misunderstood
the situation. They have strangely
misinterpreted the sympathy so lieely
expressed for their cause.
Consequently we have had for two or
thrc; weeks grave disorders disorders
destructive of all good govern
ment. Eten these were at first light'y
upokcn of, but tbey have thoroughly
undermined llie strike. The strike is
Jn fact over; it has failed. That is plain
not only to larseeing men like Mr. l'otv
llerly, but te the more desperate ones,
and consequently we hayo greater dis
order and bloodshed.
Tho public highways must be cleared.
The embargo tuuPt be raised. The only
abstractions now aro small bands of
strikers who are defying tho State gov
ernments who aro assaulting men anx
ious to move the trains. This must end.
The laws arc saSieieui, and at any cost
the laws must bo cnforeul. The eati
ence of the people has been exhausted.
Costly delays in business, the interrup
tion of trailic, the i.tieendiarv talk and
the otert acts of f trikers at Foit U'otth
lit Little Kock, at Eist St. -Louis all
enforce tho demand for ptticp, even il
peace has to be completed. The men
who strike aro on trial now; not for
striking, but for lawless interference
with others.
It does not meet the case to denounce
Jay Gould, cotpoia'e power, or the
abuses of wealth. Jay (Jeuld and every
other rieh man is entitled to exactly the
same rights of life iikd propeity as each
of these strikers. The one point now
js that property is not safe; iis move
ments are interfered with; its value is
largely decreased by unlawful combina
tions. Tho men guilty of Ihese ou! rages
must bo controlled. Mr. lVwderly as
sorts that tho Knights of Labor will ex
pel and prosecute members 'interfer
ing, except in a peaceful uud iawfal
manner, with tho running oftraiiii, or
those who haTe injured the property of
the railroad companies, wherever nitua
tcd." This is cssculial, if not to the
existence at least to the usefulness of
the Knl-jhts of Labor.
Moreover, it is essential to the well
being of society. The lawless passions
of men must be restrained. The trains
