Ono interesting piece of information
which the new congress will have laid
before it, has just been completed. It is
u full lint of nauioo pf all persons cm
ployed in the government service. And
how many do you suppose there tiro of
them? More than loO.OCW. The growth
of the army of government cmyloyes is
something marvelous. A dee.itie ago
tiieannouaccment was made that tho
number of governmental employes was
over 100,000. That was thought to be
something tremendous, and 60 it was.
Hut the growth of the government's bus-
aess, the groth of the country, the ox-
tensiou of the Jiostal system, the general
increase of business, along with tho in
crease of population, compelled the in
crease of the government's forcea to car
ry on its business. Whether the iidmin
istrstion is Democratic or Hepublicnn
tl'g increase goes on just tho same. It
Beeins like a largo numb3r, l.TJ.OOO; but
when you stop to think that there are
ovw sixty thousand postoflices nlone.and
that every oao of these has at least one
aud in some cases hundreds of emplovc0,
you begin to wonder that tho total is
not greater. Indeed, it is pVobabio that
tho number flivn above, luO.OOO, is -ion
Kidorably below the actual total.
Tho individual who tlraws tho highest

you get down to tho small fourth classl

to the business done at thoir offices,
somo or them getting the astonishing
compensat'on of $1.50 a year.

Scab.
Tlia apple scab is a parasitic fungus,
growing upon loaf and fruit, aud nour
ishing in cool, moist weather.
Tho etroct of tho scab is to cause a
large projiortton of tho fruit to drop
when quite small; to greatly disfigure
and reduce the size and market value of
that which matures, and to injure the
vitality of tho treu by causing a prema
ture falling of the foliage.
The giowth of tho scab fungus may bo
checked by spraying tho trees at proper
times during tho spring with several of
tho copper compounds commonly known
ns fungicides.
Tho most satisfactory compound thus
far tested, regard lioing had to cost, con
venience and pITectiwness. is a dilute
"Bordeaux mixture," containing four
pounds copper suiphato, four pounds
liino and fifty gallons of water.
While it has not been found practica
ble to completely prevent the growth of
scab in a single season, the experiments
deuionitrate that it ia practicable to so .
