Thereupon one of t lie prophets rcsortrd to a ilnn whereby Allah was rebuked and also received a messaRc that sent lilm "to his houte heavy and displeased" (v. 43). All of this needs to be borne In mind when wo study Ahab's course of action rc-' latcd In this lesson. I.earn by heart the tenth commandment; also Luke 12:15. I. The Schemes ef Men, vv. 1116. Ahab had been king for twenty yesrs i (II, C 90C?). Jeirccl was his summer ! cstltal, about twenty miles northwest of Sainsrla. The chief actors In this I tragedy were Nsbotb, a well-to-do cltl , ten: Ahab, a petulant monarch to' whom Kaboth refuses to sell his vine 1 yard; Jezebel, the Lady Macbeth of, Ahab's court; elders snd nobles of Jezreel, willing tools In the transac tion; false witnesses, executioner, and Klljah, the servant of Cod. who con fronted the monarch In his newly gained possession. Ahab was con stantly In conflict with the purposes of God and with his Word. Naboth had no right to sell bla vineyard (see Numbers 36:7; Lev. 2.1:23; also Etek. 46:16) and sturdily stood out for his God-given rights. These land lawa were rigid, but at the same time wise and beneficial, Instesd of )leldlng to God'a law Ahab sulks like a petted child (r. 4) aod thus again runa coun ter to God's Word (see ttntb com mandment). At this juncture Jetebel, his wife, sppesls to his pride and power as the king (v. 7), and offers to procure the coveted possession. The methods ot mankind whereby vast pos aestlona are accumulated do not al ways besr Investigation; murder and rapine, broken hearts and shortened lives, weakened bodies and stunted children can largely be traced to the sin or covetoueness, against which we alt need to be on guard (l.uk 12: IS; Eph. 5:5). The Brat alnner was covet ous (Oen. 3:6), so also were the chosen people of God (Josh. 7:21), and It was this that caused the rlrst dis sension among Christian believers (Arts 6:1-3). Jeiebel most graciously gave Ahab that which belonged to others; bow free we all can be with the property of others! She also cloaked her designs with the mantle ot religion (813). II. The 8ntsnca of God, vv, 17-20. Tbo dead Naboth was happier than his neighbors of Jezreel, tlio king and queen or any of the other evil par ticipants. Ahab began by breaking the first commandment (1 Ktnga 16:31; Deut. 5:7) and thus laid tho ground work of the whole train of evil for which ho and his household and his reign aro famous. The elders readily obeyed the word of Jezebel and Ahab l profited thereby, but now he was to hear tho Word of God and It was mit 1 to be so welcome, llccently we saw Klljah set aside, following his flight from Jezebel, but ne Is not entirely be) end uso end God now gave him a new commission, one mora task in connection with his old opponent. There Is nothing Indicating cowardice In Elijah's bold challengn of Ahab and thero Is also a suggestion of a guilty conscience In Ahab's exclamation, "Hast thou found me, O mine enemy" (v 20)? Ahab had "gone down to the vineyard of Naboth" (v, 16) to enjoy the pleasure ot possessing his Ill-gotten treaaure only to hear again his word ot doom (ch. 20:42; 21-19). It was a poor exchange Absb made (Mark 8:37), a throne and his life In exchange for the carrying out of bla own will and the possession of a vine yard. In that exact spot where Na both had been foully stoned the dogs would lick up the blood of the king. As Is usually the case, the guilty aln ner called the righteous servant ot God his "enemy," yet bad Abab obeyed the Word of Jehovah as so frequently spoken by Elijah he would bave discovered him to be bis true and best friend, not bis enemy. Ahab's sin bsd found him out (Golden Text, Num. 32:23), III. The Summary. Covetoueness Is not the mere dsslre tor things we do not possess, but a deep longing which Is willing to do wrong, to Injure oth ers, to profit by the evil deeds ot oth ers In order to come Into possession. Covetousness seeks to gain at the ex pense of higher and better things; It Is the extreme opposite ot the spirit ot him who "gave all." The greatest danger of our land and the chief source of sin Is covetousness. The source and fountain of covet ousness Is selfishness. Hence the one and only cure Is In a changed heart, one consecrated to God and devoted to the service of others. Love God, obey bis Word, strive with all our ransomed powers to build up and advance bis kingdom sod' covetousness will vanish aa mist be tor the manner sun. Covetousness la insatiable, It la never aatlsSed. It la Ilka the drag habit, It grows by leaps aod. boondf.
