New Developments. New developments in the matter of the death of J. M. Pidcock hav ing been brought to the attention of Dr. Russell, coroner, a new inquest was ordered last Friday The jury- proceeded to Kings Point cemetery where the body was exhumed and viewed. The testimony of some twenty witnesses was taken and re duced to writing. No sensational revelations were made, but much soiled linen was aired and much feeling manifested by the spectators who thronged the court room Friends ot certain witnesses entered a vigorous protest, claiming that personal privileges were being vio lated and personal rights invaded. After hearing the testimony the jury adjourned to a future day, and as yet no verdict has been made pub lic Much speculation is being in dulged in as to what the verdict will be. The testimony was all public and relevancy or irrelevancy is being widely discussed. No one, to speak of, now doubts but that a felony was committed, but to whose door the blame should be placed is a matter of wide difference of opin ion. Lockwood Misouiian. England has been staggered by the appalling increase of insanity reported by the lunacy commission. Under 50 years of age there arc about 36,000 lunatic in England and Wales today. In 1S5.J the proportion of lunatics to the pop ulation was 1 in 536. To-day it is 1 ia 293. The increase in lunacy since iSy is extraordinary. How far war is responsible for the ap palling increase is unknown. Stu dents seeking to eaplain the cause of the increase find drink accounts for about a quarter of the total cases among the men and about 10 per cent, among the women, i'hysical rather than direct mental cause is responsible for the great increase of insanity. Thirty-three per cent, of the cases are attribu ted to disease. The chief increase is lound among the pauper cUs .cs, whose lack of nourishment causes a tendency to disease and weakens the mind. 1 he increase of lunacy among the well-to-do theses is disproportionately larger than in In Germany the trormous in crease of insanity is arousing at tention, lk-ilm alcnc baa (,yo lunatics. Insanity is uxieaMiig j faster than the population. Ger man alienists declare that intem perance is the most prolific caue of Insanity. It ia iat-d that 75 per cent, of all cases of mcnul jis oidets trtaltiT in the slats asylums are due to excessive Iter and whisky drinking.
