Making It Clear to Fitz.
An Irish drill sergeant was instruct
ing some recruits in the mysteries of
marching movements and found great
difficulty in getting a countryman of
his to halt when the command was
piven.
After explaining and Illustrating
several times, he approached the re
cruit. sized him up silently for a cou
ple of minutes, then demanded ltis
name.
“Fitzgerald, sor.” was the reply.
“Did you **ver drive a donkey. Fltz?**
“Yes. sor.”
“What did you say when you wish
ed him to stop?”
“Whoa.”
The sergeant turned away Immedi
ntely put his squad in motion After
they had advanced a dozen yards or
so he bawled out at the top of his
lungs: “Squad, halt Whoa. Fitzger
ald!”
Saves Rival's Life.
Just as a chimney was al>< ut to fall
on the head of Gen. F. C. Prescott. as
he walked along a street In San Ber
nardino, Cal., It. Kennedy, his rival in
candidacy for the assembly, rushed
up, dragged him away, and saved his
life. Prescott wanted to withdraw at
once from the canvass in favor of
Kennedy, would not have
it so.
