ORPHEUM. One of the strongest bills that has ever been presented at the Orpheum is holding the boards this week. Cole & Johnson, the head-liners, are so far su perior to other colored entertainers that they simply stand in a class by them selves. Ching Lan Poo company of illusionists, who came direct from the “pike” at the St. Louis Fair, is another strong feature on this week’s bill. They produce buckets and buckets of water from simple silk robes. Next week we are to have the big Orpheum Road Show, the greatest vaudeville company in existence. This show is under the personal direction of Martin Beck, which is ample proof of its quality. Mclntyre & Heath, the perennial min strel favorites, are the head-liners. The seats are now on sale. THE JEWISH OUTLOOK Domestic News The ladies of Temple B’nai Abraham. Chi cago, are arranging for a domestic science and art bazar to take place the 15th of Feb ruary. The bazar to be held during the af ternoon and evening. Women of the Jewish Hospital Associa tion of New York have determined to raise $35,000 for the equipment of the new build ing and they are now formulating their plans for this undertaking. New York, Jan. 24. —Ex-Congressman Edwin Einstein, a wealthy lawyer, who was Republican candidate for mayor of New York against Thomas F. Gilroy in 1892, died suddenly to-night from heart failure. Police Commissioner McAdoo of New York has received a letter from two Jewish daily newspapers on the East Side compli menting him on the manner in which the force handled the crowds nz the Sarasohn funeral. The Cincinnati section of the Council of Jewish Women has extended an invitation to the national body to hold the next na tional convention in Cincinnati. The con vention will be held Thanksgiving week of November, 1905. The Machzikei Talmud Torah of New York City dedicated their new house at G 8 East Seventh street, January 2nd. Towards this building Jacob Schiff donated $25,000. The Talmud Torah is an institution where Judaism is taught to young Israel from the original Hebrew. Among the gifts to the Columbia Uni versity announced by the trustees, was one from Mrs. Annie Nathan Meyer—a por trait of Rev. Gershon Seixas, who was a very ardent revolutionary patriot and the minister of the Spanish and Portuguese Jewish congregation. Dr. David Blaustein, superintendent of the Educational Alliance, has resumed his duties after an absence of six weeks, dur ing which he investigated Jewish condi tions in the South and West. The trip ex tended through Illinois, Alabama, Wiscon sin, Ohio, Kentucky and Louisiana. Mr. Henry Phipps, who is a generous sup porter of the Educational Alliance, New York, has offered to give $1,000,000 for the erection of model tenements in that city. The Hon. Isidor Straus, president of the alliance, will be vic'e president of the so ciety to be organized to carry out Mr. Phipps’ plans. Fifty representatives of various commu nal institutions were present at a luncheon given by Mr. Adolph Lewishon, president of the Hebrew Sheltering Guardian Orphan Asylum, New York. The purpose of the gathering was to discuss the advisability of consolidating all the existing Jewish charitable institutions in the city. The plan was rejected. Isaac N. Seligman announced last week that he, together with Jacob H. Schiff, Adolph Lewisohn, Felix M. Warburg and a few others, had planned a campaign against the social evil on the East Side, New York, which had taken a new lease of life de scribed as startling. While their efforts are directed principally against the “cadet sys tem,” kindred vices are also to be attacked. It was observed by Magistrate Cornell of the Yorkville and Essex Market Courts, who is really the instigator of the movement, that East Side Jewish families were the worst sufferers from the evil, and he won dered whether some public-spirited men could not be found among the Jews who would finance the investigation. A corps of five detectives was engaged and they began their work several weeks ago.
