The newly elected board of directors of the Sydenham hospital announced the receipt of a generous gift by the in stitution from Mr. Isaac Guggenheim, treasurer of the American Smelting Company. Mr. Guggenheim presented the hospital with -+I.OOO and promised' to give monthly an amount equal to any voluntary contributions or donations raised by the board of directors, the total sum not to exceed SIO,OOO yearly. The annual meeting of the Hebrew Technical School for Girls was held on January 14tli at the Hotel Savoy. Pres ident Nathaniel Myers presented his an nual report and addresses were made by Attorney General Mayer and St. Clair McKelway. Mrs. Emma 11. Kauffman presented the school with $5,000 as a memorial of her daughter, Jessie, to be used for the education of two girls each year. The following trustees were elected: Mesdames Henry Zuckerman, Simon Hirshback. George Blumenthal, Leopold Cohn. Louis Loeb, Nathaniel Myers, Henrietta Solomon and Messrs. Alfred Lauterbach, Adolph Lewisohn, Henry Sonn and Jacob Wertheim. Jacob P. A Jewish Agricultural Aid Society was organized in Chicago for the purpose of giving aid to and finding homes on fer tile land of the western states for the hundreds of Jews who have tied from Russia to escape service in the army of the czar and are now flocking to Chicago in ever-increasing numbers. The society has undertaken a large scheme of colonization of these refugees and it will advance money from S6OO to $1,500 to purchase farms. .The money is to be returned when the farms become profita ble.
