by obtaining additional subscriptions to them, and not by diverting new funds to a third unknown and inexperienced society; such diversion has been proved repeatedly to'be a grave economic blun der in almost every branch of institu tional work. In the second place, the propaganda of the Jewish Consump tives’ Relief Society is practically an in vitation to the consumptive poor of the entire United States to flock to Denver. It is not the duty of Denver to provide for these swarms of unfortunates; Den ver is more than justified in returning all such persons, nay, is, in self-defense, bound to do so. Already there is a sur plus of stranded consumptives in Den ver, where, as elsewhere, there is no op portunity for invalids to earn a liveli hood ; Denver has troubles enough of its own, without becoming the dumping ground for the most burdensome class of dependents known to society. Comments During the life of Is aac M. Wise all the leaderlings in Israel held their ambitions in The Southern Conference check and did nothing overtly to antagonize or weaken any of the in stitutions founded by the great re former. But hardly had his disciples laid him to rest when the great host of pretenders came forward with their schemes. To-day we witness the strange spectacle of men who fought Isaac M. Wise during his lifetime, who, if not an tagonistic were always lukewarm towards his projects, posing as the Elishas upon whom fell the master’s mantle, self-appointed, however. One of the greatest aims for which Wise strove in pulpit, press and platform was uni fication and centralization of Judaism in America. Unimportant side movements sapping the strength of the central body he frowned upon. Were he alive to-day he would be the champion of some sort of synodic body, the logical crystalliza tion of his ideas and labors. At any rate, an imitation conference, such as assembled in New Orleans a few days ago, were an impossibility. Dr. Heller’s apologetic in behalf of the southern con ference in the last issue of the American THE JEWISH OUTLOOK Israelite is a remarkable document, in that it resembles the ‘ ‘ faint praise which damns.” According to Dr. Heller the conference has slavishly imitated the central body in the subjects treated and discussed, has shown no valid reason for existence except that the good brethren have had a splendid opportunity of ex changing the compliments of the season, swapping rabbinical yarns and telling of the “brilliant futures” predicted for them. Now, if Brother A. of Alabama and Brother B. of Louisiana desire a few hours of social and “intellectual” intercourse, and an exchange of such confidences as, for instance, the numer ous social triumphs, and liomiletical en dowments, is it necessary to convene a southern rabbinical conference? Juda ism in America must rid itself of its popelings, with their little sectional am bitions and glories. The Chicago Jewish Conservator has such a dread of “legalis tic” orthodoxy that The Jewish Conservator we begin to suspect that its editor never came into contact witli the gen uine article. His conception of ortho doxy must have been derived from the Berlin School of Jewish Evangelism, al though we know that for eight long years at the college he had but to walk one block to study orthodoxy at first hand. Let me ask one of the junior edi tors of the Conservator what has become of his genuine religious sentiment when as a freshman at the college he hound the phylacteries about his ai*m and was righteously indignant when a fellow student confessed his serious lapse from that particular religious act. When a journal is of trinitarian editorship, we must perforce hold all three responsible for the views expressed therein. As for mush and gush, we never claimed these attributes for orthodoxy. They are rather to be found in the pulpit and pew of our reformed-evangelical temples. Pray, did the orthodox Jew make of his Kaddish a funeral mass? Did the or thodox Jew force a sentimental and poetic interpretation of every one of his religious acts? Give us not turgid rhe toric (“noisome sounds”?) or sesqui pedalian phrases byway of reply. BEN AMITTAI. Burning of the Y. M. H. A. Building in New Orleans The Athenaeum building, in New Or leans, where the Y. M. H. A. had their home, was destroyed by fire on last Tues day. Mr. M. J. Fass, the steward of the association, who occupied a room on the premises, was a victim of the fire. Ilis dead body was found among the debris. The B’nai B’rith lodges in New Or leans, especially Gulf Lodge, suffered from the fire of the Athenaeum. All of its property, books and valuables were destroyed in the conflagration. Only the minute book of Gulf Lodge was found intact after the fire. At a special meeting held by the board of directors of the Y. M. H. A., it was decided to rebuild the Athenaeum on a more magnificent style. A committee was appointed to seek a suitable location for a new building.
