THE JEWISH OUTLOOK FOREIGN On January 7th there died in Vienna Herr Jacob Marmorosh, chief of the important banking firm of Marmorosch, Blank & Co., of Bucharest, and one of the leading Rou manian Jews. The first election of a Jew in Ireland as worshipful master of a Masonic lodge took place last month at Cork, in Hibernia lodge. No. 95, Masons, which installed Mr. S. Spiro as master for 1905. The famous Altneu synagogue in Prague, as well as the venerable Rathaus of the Jew ish community, are in danger of demolition, for the various improvements now being car ried out. An effort is being made to save the synagogue, which is over 000 years old. Clarence I. de Sola has been appointed consul for Belgium for Canada in succession to the late Jesse Joseph. Under his direc tion Belgian commerce with Canada has been much fostered and developed. Mr. de Sola is a prominent Zionist and in religion ultra orthodox. The by-elections in Hungary have re sulted in the return of two more Jewish depu ties to the diet, so that there are twenty Jew ish representatives in this body against twenty-one members in the former, even now more than in any other parliament in the world. A London dispatch of February 25th says: The Maecabeeans, the most represen tative Jewish club in London, gave a dinner and reception yesterday evening to M. Orlen deffe, Mtne. Nasimoff and the other mem bers of the Russian theatrical company, pre vious to their departure for America with the play entitled "The Chosen People.” Col. (Brevet) Mardochee Valabregue has been promoted general of brigade. The pro motion was dated January 31st. The gallant officer, who has served in the artillery, was appointed by the late minister of war. Gen eral Andre, as his chief du cabinet (principal private secretary), and was continued in that office by the present minister, M. Ber teaux. At the annual meeting of the important, society for the promotion of education among the Russian Jews, which took place on Janu ary 15th at St. Petersburg, it was reported that the revenue amounted to 110,800 rou bles, toward which the Jewish Colonization Association contributed 61,750 roubles. Of this 51.000 roubles were spent on the mainte nance of elementary schools, 8,300 roubles for libraries, 9,400 roubles for the education of teachers. 22,750 roubles were devoted in assisting necessitous Jewish students. 2,200 roubles to literary purposes, and 3,900 rou bles for subventioning a number of authors. The remaining 13,250 roubles went to pay salaries, deficits, etc. One of the stock ac cusations against the Jew in Russia, that of smuggling, has been again disproved by force of figures. W. Boris Goldberg of Vilna has published the official statistics of the various denominations of arrested smug glers. In 1900. 2,960 were sentenced, of whom fifty-five per cent, were Catholics, twenty-nine per cent. Orthodox, three per cent. Evangelical and ten per cent. Jewish. In 1901, 3.269 persons were sentenced, of whom the Jews formed nine per cent. The Jewish population along the Russian front ier contains, however, more than ten per cent of the total, so that there is no justifi cation for the outcry which was made when the Jews were again permitted to live near that region.—London Jewish World-.
