The Retail Clerks' Union is still hold
ing out its threat to arrest all dealers
refusing to close their place of business
on Sunday. Small Jewish dealers are
those most directly atleeted by the scare,
which, they say, is hurting their busi
ness. The tone assumed by its leaders
is frankly jinti-Jewish, or, as it was ex
pressed at a meeting of the association,
according to a Jewish member, its aim
is ‘‘to make the Fifth street and Sixth
street ‘kikes’ close up.” The italicized
word has developed associations similar
to those of “scab” in a strike. Both

The opening of the Hebrew Union
College last week for the present schol
astic year was attended with the most
happy circumstances. While an increase
in the number of students was looked
for. the number that matriculated was a
most pleasant surprise to the friends of
the college, many of whom were present
to witness the opening exercises. The
valuable additions that, have been made
to the faculty ami the concord and har
mony which now prevail among the stu
dents, faculty ami governing body of
the college augurs well for the future of
the institution.
Doing Good
Doing good while one lives is one of
the greatest pleasures in life. There
are none of us so poor but that we can do
some good to our fellow beings; and
how niueh more pleasure the rich can de
rive from their wealth if they would
only do their philanthropic deeds while
they arc alive and can see the results of
their actions. If we stop to think a few
moments it is not always money that is
required to bring happiness into the
world.
Sometimes a rich friend can do some
one a great kindness by giving him a
little hit of pleasure. Many persons are
so selfish that they never think of any
one else. If they have all they wish
themselves, that is all that is necessary.
Again there are others who are simply
thoughtless: they do not think of any
one else, but if they are reminded they
are glad to do so.
It is strange how few of our rich peo
ple realize the infinite amount of good
they could do if they only would give
the matter a little thought. llow much
pleasanter life would be if we would
only think of others. Those who afford
happiness to their fellow beings derive
great blessings from life, and those who
are thoughtless in this direction lost*
much that is worth living for.
