Vol. V. No. 24. The Immigrant Apostate Anarchist HOW WILL JEWISH ANARCHISTS HE DEALT WITH? It must not be forgotten that the aggregation of a million Jews in New York is so complex, derived from so many national sources, represents so many diverse interests, holds so many tremendous individualities, and man ifests so many phases of culture, that whilst the possibilities of its ultimate homogeneity are undoubted, the pro cesses thereof must of needs be very slow indeed. Homogeneity cannot be achieved by inoculation: it is a pro cess of adaptation that involves suc ceeding generations in increasing pro portions. Like evolution itself it man ifests itself by processes of elimina tion. The New York cm unity and its leaders can contribute somewhat toward aiding those processes, and not leave them altogether to the chances and freaks that mix good and bad ligs on the same tree. We all know the sources of immigration: we know that poverty and injustice ami persecution have wnrjicd the minds of hundreds of thousands; we know, too, that masses of tile immigrants are pressed down by industrial difficulties i tint inake freedom rather n ttetinn than a truth to them. In spite of all this tin* preponderant percentage of Jewish immigration Inis proved desir able. which desirability manifests it self in the birth of admirable attri butes. a love of home, faithfulness ami perseverance ami a quest after ele ments of knowledge that already long ago made the Jewish children of our country remarkable. Anil to tliis thrift and economy never degraded into inquiry, and we have a register of attributes, the operation of which is certain to insure future power, wealth, greatness, intellectual and po litical influence, even dominance. Hut this legitimate growth may In* im peded by careless or mistaken notions of hospitality ami fraternity. We are all agreed that the I’nitcd States gov ernment must place no restriction on what we understand to be desirable immigration. Any person, healthy in body and mind, with an attested ambition to obey tile law and seek a legitimate opportunity for earning bread is a desirable immigrant. Any person of unhealthy body and mind is not a desirable immigrant, and must, be excluded or afterward de ported when his presence becomes dangerous. To tliis full extent wc must all cooperate with the govern ment. We must do it because our fit i /.cnsliip demands it as a duty, and be cause the virtuous elements of our im migrant population must be pro tected; also because, so far as lies in our power, we must not contribute to the generation of racial or political prejudices that may impede the legit imate growth of our communities. Om ni' the gravest dangers the Amcricuu- Jewisli community has to confront is A Weekly Journal Devoted to the Communities of the Rocky Mountain Region the appearance of the immigrant an archist. Assuredly we know lie is not a Jew, religiously, for with his denun ciation of all legal authority the anar chist has overthrown all religious pro fessions; anarchy and atheism are practically synonymous. The Jewish anarchist does not belong to us; we claim Emma (ioldman as little as the Uonian church would claim the assas sin of McKinley, though in pity it may accompany his spirit to its Might into eternal infamy. Judaism teaches every attribute by which the citizen attests his loyalty and service to gov ernment ; an anarchist of Jewish ex traction is an apostate who determines his own excommunication without ec clesiastical process or without doom by bell and candle. Morally, the Itussian government is responsible for every soul fallen into tile hell of anarchy; morally, that government shares the infamy of the lost souls that substitute murder for peaceful government; but, whatever the cause of his ailment, shall a raving maniac be permitted to run amuck? Whatever the unhappy processes that have produced the mor al insanity of so many Kussiun vic tims. shall-they be permitted to endan ger the peace of this country? We must modify our ideas of immigration. We cannot advise the admission of mi anarchist, whoever anil whatever he is. The laws of our country demand our unconditioned co-operation, and if only for self-protection, which is wholly legitimate, we must restrict our hospitable intents and fraternal consideration to those who deserve. After all, Emma tiohlman ami her kind are but theorists, dangerous enough, but unfortunately protected by both laws and conditions that per mit unlicensed speech and the propa gation of dangerous doctrines of life and conduct. Hut tli criminal who avenges his descent from the public faith by murder and assassination has now also made his appearance; a crazed anarchist, who bears marks of the torture of liussin on his heart, his brain and his Isidy—(bid pity him —ami though lie lie both morally and mentally insane, this is not the time for explanations why he has attained to that low degree, but rather the tiint by all fair and legitimate means at our command, to aid government in stamp ing out anarchy, expelling tin* anar chist and preventing that miserable class from endangering the harmon ious relationship which, in the inter est of peace and progress, must exist between all elements of a community. There arc* immigration societies in New York which, with the very best of intentions, are too much swayed by sentiment : this is tile time for Jewish co-operation with the most rigid inter pretation of the laws of immigration, for a full consent to the national sen timent of restraining undesirable im migration. provided the government can In- made to understand that a re ligious or race test at tin- ports is it self unconstitutional. If we are to flourish in this country let us heed our dangers as well as our opportunities. —Jacob Voorsanger in t'manu-El. Denver, Colorado, April 10, 1908 The Faith of Christian Science “We worship one God, the God of Moses and all the prophets and we ac cept his Son, Christ Jesus as the only Christ ami wayshower. The law was •riven by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” Thus spoke Mr. Bliss Knapp, lec turer of the Christian Science church of Boston, before an audience in Mem phis but a week ago. It is a direct, unequivocal declaration that the be lief in Christian Science includes faith in the divinity of Christ and that grace and truth emanated only from him and his divine mission. Mr. Knapp ought to know, for he is one of the ablest and most prominent ex ponents of Christian Science, and yet there are Jews leaning towards that church or afliliatcd with it. who are very strenuous in their efforts to make other Jews believe that Christian Science is compatible with Judaism and that an Israelite remains un touched by Christian doctrine when he becomes a believer in Christian Science. The emphatic statement of Mr. Knapp places those men and women diametrically in opposition to the truth and proves all their sophis try to be but an empty bubble. Hev. Dr. J. Voorsanger, in bis Enianu-El, published recently a very strong refu tation of Mrs. Kddy's gospel of “Faith.” from which we quote the following: “We have heretofore published a declaration which still remains un challenged. namely, that if any one denies tin* historical existence of Jikus of Nazareth, or denies that his gift of healing the sick had a real exist Social Disability of the Jews “Though tin? various separate char act cristies which repel the ‘Aryan’ from tlie Jew can easily he pointed out in other races (Aryan included), a cumulative burden of idiosyncrasies weighs on our unfortunate people. It goes without saving that the Jewish type is not uniform, nor do we wish to imply that the caricaturist is always true to nature, hut it must he acknowl edged that the typical Jewish figure is not pleasing to the eye. The great masters in painting and sculpture have almost always modified or falsi fied the Jewish type in deference to aesthetic demands. This unfavorable physical impression is heightened by certain mannerisms, such as exagger ated gestures, by the peculiar voice inflection which grates on the ear and by the distortion of the English lan guage of which so many of our ‘prom inent’ Jews are guilty. Although these physical attributes are shared by oth er Oriental and also by the Latin races, they reach a climax in the Jew ish type, which in its culmination is unsympathetic to the Anglo-Saxon, the Oriental, or the Latin people. It is not agreeable to touch on this phase of our inquiry: but the importance of physical repulsion can hardly he over estimated.” Had manners is another charge made against the Jews by Dr. Kuh. Fifth Year once, lie cannot become a Christian Scientist, for without such a faith the healing of disease is impossible. Now an atheist can he cured of a boil, or a fever, or an attack of nerves, by wholesome diet and the wise sugges tion of a physician ; and if this he true as undoubtedly it is true, why pretend that faith is necessary to heal boils or fevers or the nerves? We now will go a trifle farther and make the delib erate statement that this whole Eddy gospel is based upon assumptions which historically have been proved indefensible. * • • Nothing of this kind is faith. The assumption of the historical verities of an age of legend ami fable, by the ipse dixit of an un lettered woman is not faith. Hysteri cal appeals for assistance through mystery are not faith. The denial of cause and effect, the denial of the evi dence that God works through both the law that creates and the law that destroys, is not faith. There is but one reasonable faith in find, whether it be that of Christian and Jew, Mos lem or Buddhist, the faith that inter prets human capacities as the gifts through which omniscience creates hu man happiness. Christian Science which does not deny that IT IS ( 11 BIST IANIT Y will have to make its peace with Protestant philosophy for this pagan exaltation ot the di vine attribute of healing. And we cannot believe that this new heresy, despite its large numbers, despite its strong appeals and zealous propagan da. despite its churches and chapels, lectures and healers, has. as a religious system, any future whatever.”—Jew ish S/Miliiior. Ami these had milliners lire fostered by close family nffilintion : “It serves to perpetuate objectionable idiosyn crasies. and narrows the sympathies. Not all the luvishness with which the •lew contributes to cliaritii*s can give bim the true spirit of altruism, so lout; as his interest, is so strongly cen tered in his family. The projection of self into the next kin savors strong ly of selfishness masquerading as love. And the deadly monotony of family reunions is the thief of individual de velopment.” Suppression of physical develop ment in children, asserts this writer, is another evil in Hebrew civilization. I)r. Kiili believes that gradually, by adaptions due to climate and environ ment. as well as by intermarriage, the Jewish race is surely changing. In spite of the resistance of both church and synagogue, this solution, he holds, is inevitable: “So far as the Jew is able to under stand Christianity, its points of con tact with paganism, such as* the faith in miracles ami the adoration of im ages arc merely fortuitous. Nor does the pomp of tin; church seem a true reflection of the simplicity of Jesus. As we understand the scriptures, Jesus preached essentially a conduct of life. When Jesus comes into his own, there will be no problem of race hatred.”—Dr. Edwin J. Kuh, in At- In it lie Monthly.
