Andy has well earned his promotion by the careful attention to the work he was engaged to do, as well as his steady habits, and by be ing always found at his post ready for duty at any time. Good boy, Andy,-hold the fort if you loose every man under your command. The school exhibition last Friday evening was well attended, although the evening was stormy. The pro gram was good and the rendering of the same was first class. The chil dren, one and all, performed their parts to perfection, showing that their teachers, Missess Mary Hunter and Cook, had drilled them thoroughly. The Hancock orchestra assisted very materially in making the exhibition a success by rendering several very beautiful pieces of music. Taken to gether the exhibition was a grand success, and we hope our schools will favor us with another exhibition in the near futurfe. Prononnced Hopeless, Yet Saved. D., to be agent at the Sisse ton agency, has been confirmed by the senate. A mail train running between War saw and Kowal, a town of Poand, was robbed of 150,000 roubles. The thieves escaped. The Newcastle steamer Homrook has been sunk off the cost of England and eleven of the crew lost. The Surprise lost five men. The case of the State of Nebraska ex rel Thayer vs. James E. Boyd was ar gued before the Nebraska supreme court Tuesday. The negotiations between Germany and Spain for a commereial treaty are? about to be concluded on the most fa vored nation basis. Nineteen of the states of the Mexican republic have appointed delegates to the first nominating convention ever held in Mexico, to meet April 5. The steamer Eider, which struck a rock off the Isle of Wight two months ago, has been floated and towed to Southampton. The steamer will be re paired and again placed in service. Mr. Stewart, of Nevada, gave notice in the senate that immediately after the morning hour on Monday next he should call up his free coinage silver bill. The measure is now on the soim'.e f.-alemlar with an adverse report. At o'clock Ilia senate went into executive sen'-ion on the Beliring .sea arbitration treaty. A call of thu senate was ordered. Wednesday. WASIIINQTON, March 80.—The speaker announced several committee changes, after which a few unimportant bills were passed. The house then went into com mittee of the whole on the free wool bill. An evening session was held. In the senate, Mr. Dawes, of Massachu setts, called up the pending and partially completed Indian appropriation bill, bub yielded to Mr. Stanford, who thereupon delivered a speech in favor of his legal tender dollar bill. The senate then re sumed consideration ol' the Indian appro priation bill, the pending question being agreed in the house proposition to trans fer the control of the Indians from civilian Indian agents to army officers. Tliur*lay. WASHINGTON, March 81.—LA the. senate Mr Allen, of Washington, presented a petition in relation to congressional assis tance to the Nicaragua canal. The senate by a vote of 2!) to 34 refused to strike out the house provision authorizing tiie detail of army officers to act as Indian agents. After the consideration of the Indian bill had been completed by the senate in com mittee of the whole, a question arose on a motion to raise the salary of the Santee agent in Nebraska from $1,200 to £1,500," which was voted down and the senate at 4:30 p. m. adjourned. After some routine business the. house went into committee of the whole on the free wool bill, Mr. Brodus, of Pennsyl vania, taking the floor in opposition to the bill. FrlJ.ijr. WASHINGTON, April 1.—In the senate Mr. Morgan stated that he did not intend I to call up his silver resolutions until Mon day next. Thereupon routine business was resumed. In the house a bill for a wagon and motor bridge across the Missouri river at St, Charles, Mo., was passed. Mr. Cateh ings of Missouri, submitted a report from the committee on rules on Mr. Anderson's resolution to investigate the census office. The house went into committe of the whole on the free wool bill, Mr. Blount, of Georgia in the chair. Saturday. WASHINGTON, April 2.—The river and harbor bill was reported by that commit tee and referred to the union calendar. The house went into committee of the whole on the free wool bill, Mr. MoKinney (Dem.), of New Hampshire, speaking in favor of the measure. Mr. Burrows, of Michigan, closed the general debate on the free wool bill for the Republicans, speaking in opposition to it. The senate was not in session. Alouday. WASHINGTON, April 4.—On motioji of Mr. Geary of California the house sus pended the rules and took up the anti Chinese bill. Fil'teeu minutes were allowed each side for debate. Tl\e bill passed under a yea and nay vote, 170 to 42. The bill, as it passed the house, absolutely prohibits the coming into the United States of Chinese persons, except minis ters or other diplomatic representatives, consuls general, commercial agents and other agents of the Chinese government traveling on business. The house then went into committee of the whole on the free wool bill, Mr. Springer making the closing speech. In the senate there was some debate as to the order of business, Mr. Sherman moving to take up the bill to provide for a uniform standard of classification and grading of cereals. At 2 o'clock the un finished business was laid before the sen ate, but by unanimous consent Mr. Morgan was allowed to proceed with his silver speech for the balance of the day.
