Misses Morse, Avery and Stanley of the local telephone office went to Montpelier last evening to attend a gathering given at the home of Miss Lucy Dodge in honor of her marriage which comes next Wed nesday. Miss Dodge was formerly em ployed as a telephone operator both In Barre and Montpelier. A fine time was enjoyed. Light refreshments were served, and no end of amusement was furnished by a list of presents given the hostess: For a city so many hundred miles away from the scene of the contests, the base ball series which Is being played between the Pittsburg Nationals and the Boston Americans for the world's championship, is attracting unusual attention here. Each evening a crowd awaits the news from the Times' bulletin. If it's Pittsburg that won there is a groans from the crowd ;if it's the other way there are war-whoops. It's very easy to see where the sympathies of local sportsmen lie. While one of Smith Bros.' teams was standing In front of M. G. Sawyer's house on Franklin street this forenoon the horse became frightened and ran down the hill to Kim street where it was stopped. The crass bar and one shaft were broken, caused by coming In contact with an elec tric light pole. The City Fish Market horse, while coming down the Franklin street hill, stepped on a rolling stone and fell down. This horse was just getting to its feet when the first runaway passed, barely escaping a collision. On Wednesday evening Misses Darling and Hunter entertained The Gleaners.The members of the club were met at the Pres byterian chnrch vestry by the hostesses and each did ample justice to a most ei cellent supper. The club then repaired to the home of Miss Darling where a pleas ant hour was spent In reading "The Mer chant of Venice." After this they re turned to the church and witnessed a charming little operetta, "Fairyland."
