The escape from a serious conflagration
In the business section of Barre last even
ing is a matter for congratulation. The
fire wag in a section of the business blocks
on Main street where the danger Is very
great. The buildings there are of wood
and quite old so the problem of extin
guishing the fire would have been a mat
ter of most serious consequence had the
flames gained much headway before being
discovered. The fire department deserves
the heartiest praise for its prompt rod
efficient work.
The school situation in at least one or
two districts in the town of Rutland man
ifestly demands attention. When a school
Is closed because money enough to hire a
teacher who can control unruly boys is not
forthcoming, and the idle popils are not
required to attend school elsewhere, the
condition seems to be one requiring the
bringing to bear of the law. A continu
ance of such conditions means the breed
ing lit Ignorance, lawlessness and vice.

There Is Indeed something else due such
pupils besides the rule, or attempted rule,
of their teach"r. The time is past when
the pupils should be allowed to "play
horse" with the one who would inculcate
a few scraps of knowledge Into their cra
niums, when the ''big" boys can, with im
punity, stand the teacher on his head in
the snow drift or thrust a similar indigni
ty upon the schoolma'am. It the action of
the pupils are enough to break up a school
then tiie law should take a hand In tbe tu
