Cincinnati, Ohio, May 19. The refusal of Governor Cox of Ohio to aend troops to Cincinnati in an effort to control the strike of the employes of the Cincinnati Traction company after spectacular riots in the earlv part of Saturday had influ enced Mayor Henry T. Hunt to ask for th militia, was followed late Saturday by the filing of a petition by the city of Cincinnati for a receiver for the com pany. After hearing arguments on the petition, Judge Ueorghan of the common pleas court, before whom the action was brought, listening to thw pica of attor neys for the traction company for more time in which to answer, adjourned court until to-day, when he will hear the re mainder ot the arguments and pass judgment. Rioting was almost continuous Ratur day from the time the company attempt ed to operate cars out of the Brighton barns, until they withdrew all cars from the streets at noon. While a riot that occurred at the Brighton barns Saturday morning probably proved the most sen ous yet, one a little later at Fourth avenue and Vine street was the more spectacular. .Small steel beams, barrels of plaster, and bags of cement were hurled . upon a passing car from the upper floors of the 34-story building o the Union Central Life Insurance com panv. Saturday night the street car system was completely paralyzed, and the strik ers appear content when this condition prevails, but noting has invariably re (turned when the company attempted to operate cars on anything like an extend ed Bcale. In case Judge (ieorghan appoints receiver for the company to-day, it is probable that the strike will be toon settled, inasmuch as the vital matter now at dispute between the company and the striking employes is recognition of cent. the union. They have agreed to go back to work if the union is recognized. If the receiver is denied, the situation will revert to what it was a week ago, with neither side having gained any material dvantage. baturdav night no cars were operating and the city appeared quiet REMODELING AND REDYEING A SPECIALTY I. Washington, 1). C, May 11).--Statistics relating to the production of slack coop erage stock for 1011 are presented in a bulletin soon to be Issued by Director Durand of the bureau of the census, de pertinent of commerce. It was prepared under the direction of W. M. Steuart, chief statistician for manufactures The production of slack cooperaue stock reported in 1911 by 1,182 mills amounted to I ,.),2H,!Iub)IHM staves. 100.- 407,1)00 set of heading, and 3."S3.21S,(KK) hoops, as compared with 1,4IM),B78,000 staves, H7 ,0.17, WO acts of headiiiir, and 2113,712,0(10 hoops reported by 1,21)8 es tablishments in 1010. These figures rep resent a decrease of 0 per cent, in pro duction of staves and increases of 0.7 per cent, and 19.4 per cent., respectively, in production of (heading and of hoops. Slack cooperage, includes the materials essential to the manufacture of barrels for all purpose other than for contain ers of liquid. Neini-tiijjrht cooi, rafle stock used for making vessels required (or butter, lam, patte, paint, mince ment. etc., and also packages called wooden ware, such as candy and tobacco pails, bucket, tubs, firkins, and churns, are included in this report, together with barrels generally considered slack coop erage, containing such solid and powdery substance as dried fish, leaf tobacco, ce ment, lime, powder, paints, hardware, chemicals, flour meal, sugar crackers, starch, resin, salts, cranberries and veg etablea. Since 1009, when the production of beech staves first exceeded that of elm staves .there bas been no change in the ranking of the four important stave woods. Comparing mil with lmo, not only h the order of the leading woods remained the same, but the percentage each forms to the total remains fairly consrtant. For tight cooperage stock, woods of particular qualities are demanded; on the other hand, the choice of slack bar rel material is governed more by the availability of the timber than bV the special qualities of the wood. Elm is the best stave wood and is preferred above all others for flour barrel. The 1900 statistic showed that elm was more largely used for staves than anv other wood, but in 1911 it ranked fourth, the per cent, of decrease as compared with 1910 being greater thsn for any other important wood. P5ne staves, which showed the next greatest decrease, included not only the white pine used in the north largely for semi-tight coop erage, but also the yellow pine of the south, which served for packages for tobacco, resin, truck produce, and hard ware. The trade name "hardwood stave" includes principally those made of beach, birch and maple. Tbey are becoming more and more the active competitors of elm staves. Their most extensive use probably is for sugar barrels. Beech is not only the most conspicuous of these, but for three year only two stave woods red gum vnd pine excelled It in the amount used. In 1111(1 maple. which up to that time had been one of the five important stave wood, took sixth place, and went lower in 1911, when it fell to eighth. Ash Is an important stave wood, be cause it meets an exacting demand for butter tubs, firkins, churn, etc. Coinci dent with chestnut's rapid rise as a lumber wood was ita increase in im portance as stave material. Both its abundance and its suitability contribut ed to ita usefulness; but tns manufac ture of, as well as the market for, chest nut staves has been localized in the mid- lle Atlantic states, principally Pennsvl- vania and Virginia, where they are used mostly for cement and lime packages. Ked gum is pre-eminently the leading stave wood and has held first place in production since 1907. Red gum staves are shipped far and wide and are p.it to a greater number of us than those made from any other wood. In the South this " timber is practically the only wood used for moksses and sugar barrels. There was an Increase in the total manufacture of heading in 1911. a com pared with 1910, but certain kind, beech, elm, maple and cottonwood. showed marked declines, while pine, oak and ash made most substantial gains. In th New England states white pine and spruce were, in 1911, the leading woods; in the southeastern states yellow prne. principally second growth loblolly and short leaf; in the Mississippi vallev, red gum, ash and oak; and in Lake state, basswood. Bawwood heading is the mont valuable and is the wood desired above all others for flour barrels. Bass- wood showed an increase over the amount reported for 1910, of more than 24 per THE NATIONAL BANK OF BARRE lo cated at Uarre, in the state or Vermont, It elating Ha affair.
