ABOUT THE STATE HAPPENINGS OF INTEREST FROM V DIFFERENT SECTIONS John Mandigo recently took 80 pounds of honey from one tree in Tinmouth and 65 pounds from another. During the carnival week at Rutland, the store of L. A. Miner was entered and about $35 in silver stolen. The, class entering the high school at Bellows Falls this fall numbered 07, a larger' number than iii any former year. . Mrs. Cornie Glynn Coeklin of Rutland has left for tineniro, to join the Mieehan Grand opera company, which will begin its season in Dayton, O., and come to the .New England states next spring. The registration of the Rutland high school the first day of this term was the largest in the history of the school, there beinu 120 m the entering class, 111 in the sophomore class, 05 in the jxinior class and 78 in the senior. Attorney Walter A. Dane, formerly of Newport, has been admitted to partner ship in the firm of Bates, Nay &. Abbott, counsellors at law in uoston, ot wnien cx-Oov. John L. Bates of Massachusetts is the senior member. Mrs. Willard, proprietor of the Or chard Park hotel at Manchester, has env ployed Boston architects to make plans for remodeling the building into a mod em summer hotel with 50 rooms with baths. The changes call for an invest ment of $25,000 or more. The Castleton Normal school opened Tuesday morning with one of the larg est entering classes in its history, num bering sixty. Of this number more than twenty at least have taught one year and more than forty are high school graduates. With this number in its en tering class, the school looks forward to a very successful year. Fire Monday evening destroyed the house on the hheldon road m bt. Albans occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sholun, who were away from the house at the time. The contents of the house, in cluding a piano, were burned, nothing being saved but one chair and a few po tatoes. There was an insurance of S500 on the household goods and $500 on the house. The Manning Manufacturing com pany, which has been located in Rutland for two j'eurs, has begun the erection of a new factory, which will be one story high and 200 by IM feet in size. About 30 hands will be emydoved the year round and the concern, when it gets into its new quarters, will legin the manu facture of several new lines of machin ery. The lid is now on tight in Burlington so far as gambling of any description goes and Grand Juror Black has served notice that any infraction of the law will meet with the sternest kind of pros ecution. The shutting of the lid follows the conviction in city court ot fSimeon Hebert for keeping gambling instru ments, lie pleaded eiiilty to this chanre and was fined $10 and costs, ..of $6.80 which he promptly paid. - Thomas Flaherty of Poultney died in the Rutland hospital Monday of injuries received in the consolidated slate com pany's quarry in North Poultney Wed nesday of last week. He was hurled to the ground 60 feet below, when a steel rod broke, and he sustained a compound fracture of the jaw, two fractures of the left wrist and a broken left leg. Mr. Flaherty was 60 years old and hnd no near relatives. Colburn, . tor merly of Bellows Free academy, Fairfax, has. entered upon nis new duties as prm cipal at Burlington. . , Mrs. Eliza Brown of Rutland will pass her 100th birthday next Friday, having been a resident of that city for 7 years Mrs. Brown was born .September 12, 1813, in the little town of Andover, being one of a family of 11 children, all of whom lived to lie between the ages of HO und 00 years except two who died in infancy. When she was three years old her father and mother, Jlr. and Mrs. Levi Littlefield, moved to Rutland and lived on a farm on the Cold River road for many years. After some time had passed they moved to a house near the fair grounds and it was from therp, CO years . ago . she was married to Oscar Brown. After Mr. Brown's death she moved to the house where she now lives, Mrs. Brown is a member of the Congre gational church in Rutland and has been in constant attendance until over 80 years of age. Mrs. Brown springs from old Revolutionary stock, her grandfather, Alexander Bragg, and an uncle, Himeon JJttlefield, fighting all through the Revolutionary war. WOMAN'S BODY IN CORNFIELD. Evidently Murdered by Man Who Lay in Wait for Her. Windsor, Ont., Sept. 11. The body of a well dressed woman found hidden In a corn field near Old Castle, eight miles from here, Tuesday night, had not been identified yesterday. I he woman, about 35 years old, had been terribly beaten over the head with a blunt instrument. Her body bore evidence of a fierce strug gle. Her face was a mass of cuts and bruises and her clothing was torn to shreds. . The coroner is conducting an investi gation. He is of the opinion that the woman was attacked by some person who lay in wait for her as she was passing along s,ome road not far from a field which is part of a farm owned by Michael Robinson. One man was killed and five injured by an explosion upon the torpedo boat Craven yesterday at sea. The Craven was brought in yesterday afternoon by the revenue cutter Yama craw.
