In a' fire at the home of John Teavey
in Inland Pond, Thursday, a young horse
was smothered, it being in a shod at the
back, where the fire started. Most of
the damage'-in the house wag caused by
water, as the tire was soon put out.
Conductor William Gilbert of Rutland
was slightly injured Thursday when
rear-end collision occurred between C'f
tleton and I'oultney of the Eagle Bridge
train over the D. & H. railroad, and a
freight train. The freight was running
ahead of the passenger train.

an unusual purchase the other day when
he paid mzn lor an old hearse, the prop
crty of the city, its original purchase
dating back to the time when it was
customary for each town to own
hearse. Mr. l'lanky will make this over
into a barouche with wide seats.
Carl Peters of Mendon pleaded guilty
a few days ago in Rutland city court to
the charge of stealing a cow owned by
Col. H. Edward l)yer in Mendon, and
was sentenced to not less than three and
not more than five years at the house of
correction, lie also has two years and
five months to serve on a broken parole
trom the house or correction.
