THE I5AUKE DAILY TIMES BA11RE, VT., SATURDAY, APRIL 11, 1914. ABOUT THE STATE happenings of interest from Different sections David B. Locke ha been re-elected su perintendent of the Rutland city schools, at a salary of $2,400 a year, an increase of $300. Rev. Teter Black has. resigned the pas torate Of Grace Methodist church, St. JohnSbury, to take effect April 15. Mr. Black has received calls to the First Methodist church of Boston and the First chureh of Lynn, Mass. w , It is not expected that navigation on Lake Champlain will open for a week or 10 days yet. Last year it started April 1. The lake is at present in a very "mushy" state, but there seems to be no sign of a break-up. Very little freiglit has accumulated at the Burling ton wharf as yet. I USE OF MINERAL WATERS. Consideration of Interest and External , Application. , -The intelligent individual eager to avail himself of the best aids that mod ern medical science affords cannot help .being ballled by. the conflicting claims made regarding mineral waters. He sees numerous cases in which relief has un questionably been obtained by patients who have visited one of the many springs in this country or Europe; but when he considers, the possibilities in cluding rest, change of diet and environ mentthe result is a hopeless confusion of ridiculous claims. The added ques tion arises of the relative value of the different uses of the same waters. At some of the widely known spas for ex ample, Saratoga the internal use of waters . takes precedence; at Mount Clemens, White Sulphur Springs and others the -baths are chieHy relied on; at Hot Springs and French Lick the com bined method prevails. In view of the diversity of practice and the impossibil ity of measuring the consequences in any -precise way, The Journal of the American Medical Association agrees with Dr. Guy Hinsdale, secretary of the American C'Hmatological association, in scouting the claims of the specific virtue of particular mineral ingredients in the waters, except in such obvious features as laxative action or the absorption iron salts. If we assume, writes Hinsdale, that approximately equal results are achieved by a - course of bathing in waters so dissimilar, we cannot avoid the inference that the chemical con stituents of these different springs are not per se the active therapeutic agents. That certain baths may be used with good results in a case of gout, ought to suggest that the hydrotljerapeutic meth ods employed are more potent than the fact that the waters employed have a special chemical composition. If the cultivation of the rational use of mineral waters involves an accurate knowledge of their contents, information regarding them must have some guaran tee of accuracy. For the past twenty years it has not been possible in France to advertise any mineral water as such, or to exploit a mineral-water station, without the favorable recommendation of, a commission under whose direction the analyses are made. If such rules were in force in the United States, fake "lithia" waters would long ago have been driven out of the market. ' The damage to mineral springs re sulting from ti' "ltroMed , commercial ventures is illtiM. ..'ll by conditions at Saratoga. The amount of mineral mat ter held in solution by some of the waters there obtained is dependent on the quality of carbon dioxide which im pregnates the water and the pressure exerted at the' mineral-water vein. . For over twenty years an exhaustive pump ing of the gas was carried on by a car bonic gas industry, and a great depletion of the mineral water basin took place, depriving the entire area of materials which nature had furnished for the maintenance of her natural ' fountains. Since New York state, through its res ervation commission, has undertaken a protective policy , with regard to the springs, and the pumping operations have been stopped, the restoration of the mineral waters to the Saratoga basin is being accomplished. - Examina tions by the state hygiene laboratory at Albany show the return of a steady flow and fairly constant mineralization vary ing only .with physical disturbances. A few years must elapse before the springs will have returned to all the natural con-, ditions- which were present before the gas companies began their 'operations. These facts serve to show that scientific control may sometimes be a beneficent procedure, and that, presumably through the public health service, it ought to be applied mora widely in the United States. . Auction Sale ' ' AT THE City Auction Market Saturday at 1:30 and 7 P. M. As I will soon be leaving the state for the, West, I will sell at public auc tion sale my personal property at the above-named place and date. Edward Barrow, the president, secre tary and treasurer of the International league, says that the statement by the Federal league directors that they are to beoome a major league is a huge joke. He says that about 35 of his men took the bait of the Federal league, but he will not lose more than 24.
