SECTIONS Mrs. Grace Whittcmore of West Brat tleboro waa formerly a nurse for Dr. Ed ward Carman of Freeport, N. Y., at whose home Mrs. Louise Bailey was shot on the evening of June 30. (u '. ; Sparks from a passing freight train set fire to the station at Hyde Tark last Wednesday, but an auto' hifched onto the hose cart and hustled it to the place, so the damage was slight. The body of Mrs. Roxana F. Benjamin, 90, widow of Russell Benjamin, who was the first Vermont soldier killed in the hotflo nt null Run. was brought to Brat- tleboro the other dar and later taken to North Hinsdale, N. H., for burial. Passengers on the Boston 4 Maine railroad last Monday had an odd expcrW ence several miles north of White River Junction, which, however, resulted with out damage. While the train was run ning at a good speed, the cars pitched to one side so much so that the train crew thought they were off the iron and the signal to stop was pulled. The whole train passed over the place but an in spection waa made and it was found that the track was 12 inchea "out of line" because of the effect of the heat upon the rails. . The Passing of Huerta. After seventeen ' months of power Huerta, yielding to the pressure of events, resigns. The Mexican chamber of deputies with a gravity that only dis-. cipline' can have taught it accepts his resignation, and Carbajal succeeds Huerta as provisional president. Carba jal's principal function will be to trans fer authority to the victorious constitu tionalists. Huerta will go into a com fortable exile, probably provided with safe passage on board the cruiser of some European power, and will join the Parisian colony of . expatriated Latin Americans.. Huerta has made a "game" fight in the face of heavy odds, but he was doomed to lose from, the day that President Wilson intervened in Mexico. The curtain has descended on One act of a drama which mav have a great ef fect on politics in the United States and in Mexico. The number of the act in the drama cannot be assigned to it now. If it is the fifth act everybody will be relieved, but if experience counts for anything tl e United States may find it self involve i in a very complicated "sub plot." Wf.bave pushed Huerta out, for we have oeen in virtual alliance wiin Villa an i the constitutionalists." The mass of people are disposed to wlie'. they call, "judging by results." ey will proclaim the downfall of Huerta as a great triumph lor rresiaeni Wilson, but it may well prove a Pyrrhic victory if we shrink from the responsi bility for the future of Mexico which is implied in our expulsion of Huerta. We cannot get rid of our responsibility by shutting our eyes.. We have to all in tents and purposes intervened in Mexico in favor of. the constitutionalists. If our proteges misbehave when in office the world will look to us to call them to account. If we disappoint the world's expectation, if we allow the paper we have indorsed to go to protest, the people of the United States may soon realize that in preferring Villa to Huerta it chose only between King Lok and King Stork. Xor need we waft long for this realiza tion if the victorious constitutionalists take to themselves all the merit of over throwing Huerta. Mexican parties are all "kittle cattle," as the Scotch say, and the constitutionalists may think it good policy to evoke Rational spirit to support them in a demand on us to get out of Vera Cm. In the event that there is only the' normal confusion that follows a change of dictatorship in Mex ica, we shall have to "watch out" vig ilantly to see that it does not run into counter revolution, we must keep our implied pledges, to the world, and the performance of our promises may con vert the "results" of President Wilson's policy from laurels into prickly pears.
