The Slieppard resolution, sim ilar to the Hobson proposal in tho House, is now pending in the Senate. The burgo master of Ghent was to Imvo tendered n banquet to lifty Americans, fifty Eng lish and fifty Cnnudiun delegates in the I. all where the treaty was signed. Later, Sulgrave Manor, the ancestral homo of George Wushington in England, was to have be.en presented to tliB Ainer' lcun people by the British peace eenten nary committee. The homo already lias been puichuscd. It probably will be re habilitated and presented later. Jle.'teving despite the war the annivers ary should not pass unobserved in the L nited States, a number of widely : known citizen of this country who are interested in the movement issued a 1 communication asking that tho day be remembered and celebrated at specified j . dates beginning february 14. lhe com munication follows: "One hundred years ago to-day there was signed at Ghent in Flanders the fceaty of peaco between Great Britain and the Unitod States, which marked the close, of what has happily proved to be the lart war between hnglish-speaking peoples of the earth. To-day tho city of Ghent is at the very center of the terrible conflict that rages in Europe. "Tho American peace centenary com mittee cannot permit this anniversary to pass without inviting the thoughtful at tention of their fellow citizens to the contrast presented by the country 350 period of peace which English-speaking peoples have enjoyed among themselves on the one hand, and the appalling de struction of life, nronertv and irreat monuments of civilization which the Eu- ropean war involves on the other. It j had been our confident hope that the ex ample wlijch the English-speaking peo- pies have set in their relations with each j other would be followed bv the other great nations of the earth in their sev-1 eral international relations. It bad been our earnest desire that the spirit of , peaceful and friendly cooperation which each of these p"Oples manifests toward the people of the United States would , also mark their dealings with one an- j other. Unfortunately this was not to' be, and we are sorrowfully called upon to mark our centenary celebration in the midst of the most terrible and de- ; struct ive war that history records. i "Even at such a time, we must avow ' once more our sympathetic faith in the j lupremacy of justice over force, of law ! over right. We. rejoice in the peaceful relations of a hundred years among all : Knglish-speaking people, and particular- : , !y in the undefended and unfortified line nearly four thousand miles in length, which divides the territory of the Unit ed States from that of the Dominion of Canada. The mutual trust, forebearancc and helpfulness which make that unde fended boundary a link and not a barrier between two peoples, we offer as an example to our warring brothers across the sea. "It had leen our purpose, when our committee was orcrnni'ed in 1010, to plan for a great celebration of the cente nary anniversary by various method which have ow because of the terrible war which is still convulsing Europe and distributing the whole world, be come Impracticable until the close of the eoiilict. But we appeal to the people In all tho tt.ites and to all civic bodies to make this a notable anniversary bv suitable ex- i rciwa in churches of all denominations on the Hth of February, the date agreed upon for that purpose with our associ ates; by formal addresses at the cap itala of the reerw-etive stste on the 17th snd Dth of February, the dat" of tha ratification and proclamation of tha treaty; and also by appropriate rvercise in all the chili on the i''nd day of February, or on such later date or dates in the spring of 1015 as may be locally dimrd preferable.
