J.ondon. .March ixrd Hilton an nounced in the House of Lord Wedneu- day that the supply of petrol was so &ngiana, j short that on the expiration of the our rent licenses 111 April none would be available for private motors. Boston, March 30. A claim of $10, 040,000 against the city of Boston was received by Mayor Curley Wednesday. This unexpected demand comes from Thomas Daws of Watford, England, who professes to hold a note for .C1.000 ster ling issued on July 3, 1780, by David Jeffries, then treasurer of Boston, to John Bradford, in repayment of a war loan. For nearly 128 years this note has been bearing interest at per cent. Considerable interest attaches to the opinion of John L. Sullivan, the cor poration counsel, as to the validity of the note. Kven if he decides that the debt still stands, the city will probably seek further for flaws in the title, for $10,040,000 is not to be parted with cas ually. The note has been doubling it self every 11 vears, and in Kngland coin amounts to 4,000,000, but luckily for Boston the present rate of exchange is now only 4.76. ALMOST OVER. A hill giving the military authorities power to order re examination of men previously rejected and also of men who already have served and been discharged in consequire of wounds or illness, wan moved in the House of Commons yesterday on second reading by Chancellor Boimr Law. The chancellor said the bill was an absolute necessity owing to the military situation. Owing to the submarine menace it was proved impossible to obtaiu the men ex pected from agricultural or from the ad miralty and the shipbuilding yards. The chancellor said the bill would enable the military authorities to deal with one mil lion men, and they estimated that at least 100,000 men would be available within the next three months. Stop Food Crop Waste Methods. by Improving sorgunvs, varieties thouM be sown that do not shatter, especially in the drier districts. Xo grain should be allowed to become dead ripe before cutting, because of the tendency to shatter when in that condition. Most farmers probably will find it possible to locate and prevent im- j portant wastes if at the beginning of the season mey win give uie mailer serious thought and undertake to correct such wasteful practices." F. IL Abbott, County Agent. General Sporting Notes. Dutch Leonard has at last arrived in the Red Sox trajning camp. Dutch is a hard worker The secretary of agriculture, D. F. Houston, on March 27, issued the follow ing statement : 'Both for economic and patriotic rea sons the American farmer should strive this vear for the highest standard of efliciency in the production and conserva tion of food. But production accom plished by wasteful method does not make for efficiency, and careful thought, iu tip behind but he is therefore, should lie given to tne steps that need to be taken. "At this, the approach of the growing season, it is pertinent to consider uteps which should be taken during the start ing or the growing of crops to prevent . or eliminate wastes.- In the case of the great staple cereals, which constitute a J large proportion of our fooj supply, eon-; spictious production wastes result from failure to give proper attention to the. selection and safeguarding of eeed for planting, the preparation of the land, and the care of the crop. For instance, only varieties known to be well adapted to the region where planted should be selectnl, so that in case of such a crop as corn the grain will not fail to mature properly in a normal season. The plant ing of seed that w ill not germinate often results in great loss of time, labor and money which could have wen avoided by testing the weed for germinability before planting. In some sections the damage to crops ball hard at their training camp, but they were unable to win their game Wednesday with 15 hits for a total of zl bases. The Pirates have commenced to use the axe. One outfielder, one pitcher and one catcher have been given their re !ae. Ty Cobb failed to register a hit in his first appearance of the season Tuesday.
