Preston, aged 07 years, died at his home yesterday morning after an attack of apoplexy which he suffered Saturday, following three years of in creasing illness. He was born in town Dec. 5, 1851, and had always lived here. His parents were the late William R. and Zilpha (Davis) Preston. Since the age of nine years he lived at the well known Preston farm in the Camp brook neighborhood and devoted his life to farming. Mrs. Preston died 10 months ago. The children are Mrs. William T. Gilford of Hartford, Conn., and Walter II. Preston, who carries on the home place. There are two grandchildren, Margaret and Leonard Preston. The fu neral will be held Wednesday at- 2 o'clock, Rev. J. Wesley Miller officiating. The United States civil service com mission has announced an examination for the county of Windsor to be held at Randolph Aug. 23 to fill the position of rural carrier at Bethel. The examina tion will be open only to citizens who reside in the territory of the Bethel post office. The form setting forth the other requirements and application blanks may be obtained from the postmaster at Bethel or from the U. S. civil service commission at Washington, D. C. Appli cations should be forwarded to the com mission at Washington as soon as pos sible. Mrs. Etta Byam of Montpelier is with her brothers, Edgar and Benjamin Dear- H. N. Senay is recovering at the home of relatives in St. Cesaire, Que., from cuts on the head and face sustained last Thursday when his automobile collided with a telephone pole, throwing his head through the windshield. Donato Galanti was chopping on the hill north of the village yesterday when he cut a gash in a lower leg which Dr. O. V. Greene sewed up. David Burrelle wag with the injured man and helped him home. Mark White, aged nine years, of Springfield, Mass., who is spending the Bummer with W. C. Bingham, his uncle, broke both bones of a forearm near the elbow last Friday when riding Mr. Bing ham's horse back to the house from the watering tub. The horse was frightened by some children and jumped, throwing the boy off from his back. An X-ray examination was made and the bones were set at Randolph by Drs. F. C. An gell and E. C. Burrelle. Miss Marion Billiard returned Sunday from visiting relatives at Wyckliff, Ohio. Sunday guests at the inn included Martin A. Brown and party of eight from Boston, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Wool son of Springfield, Mr. and Mrs. Fields of MonU'jIier. Bascom house guests yesterday includ ed Mr. and Mrs. K. C. Grnehl of Passaic, N. J., Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Mason of Montclair, N. J. Mrs. M. n. Crothers of Lowell, Mass., is a guest of her sister, Mrs. F. B. South worth, where her two sons have been for 10 days. Mrs. Fred Fay, her sons, Earl and James Fay, and her grandson, Gardner Fay, of Everett, Mass., came yesterday to visit at F. F. MtCullough's." Mrs. Josephine Lane is spending some time at the home of Mrs. Mariette Cush man. F. E. Goss, aged 70 years, died in Barnard Sunday at the home of his brother after a long illness. A prayer at the house was said this morning by Rev. Louis I. Holway, after which the remains were carried in A. Lee Cady's motor hearse to St. Johnsbury for inter ment. The infant child of Leslie A. Spooner was buried at Fairview cemetery yester dav with a prayer by Rev. J. Wesley Mi'llcr. Mrs. J. H. Beckwith was operated on yesterday at the sanatorium for the re moval of a tumor by Dr. P. E. McSween ey of Burlington and last evening was making satisfactory progress. Mrs. Margaret Hassam was operated on yesterday for appendicitis at the san atorium. The operation was considered satisfactory. MiBS Mabel Miller is home from teach ing in Farmington, N. H., and from sum mer work supervising children's gardens. Ex-Congressman Frank Plumley of Korthfield was here yesterday on Fowler estate business. NORTH FAYSTOIS A large airplane passed over this part of the town Saturday afternoon, which caused considerable excitement among the old, as well as the young. Eugene Berry Griffin is stopping at the home of his parents, being recently idischarged from U. S. service. He has been stationed at the debarkation hos pital, New York. Ed. Bennett of Waltsfield is helping ,do the haying on his fathers place. Charles Proctor of Waterbury is at the home of his brother, C. J. Nelson. Mr. and Mrs. Julius Palmer of Waits ,fleld visited at the home of Mrs. Palmer's brother,, Charles Wheeler, recently. Walter Corliss of Warren was in town Saturday on business. Mrs. Floy Joslyn, Mis' Eveline Joslyn and mother and Miss Elsie Long, all of Waitsfield, were in town Saturday. . Mr. and Mrs. John Neil and two sis ters, Mrs. Levi Seiver and Mrs. Ann Romerville, all of Waitsfield, visit at the home of their brother, Join Hoff man, Sunday. v Elgin Martin of Waterbury was a vis itor in town Sunday. Harold Griffith of Waterbury was a week-end visitor in town. TUNBR1DGE Mrs. n. F. Ditnond returned last week from a few days spent with her daugh ter, Mrs. H. A. Aldrich, in Sharon. Judge and Mrs. Stone of Strafford called upon Judge and Mrs. H. R. Hay ward Sunday. William Taylor has sold his farm to parties from Michigan. Henry Williams has also sold and has arranged to re move to William Noble's at the village. Haying operations are so far com pleted that Road Commissioner Rowell and assistants have resumed operations upon the town highways. A. P. Osborne was in Wilmot and Franklin, N. H,, a few days last week to eee his brother, Horace Osborne, also a Civil war veteran and 81 years of ago, who has just submitted to the amputa tion of one arm as a result of blood pois oning in the hand. WEST BROOKFIELD Mr. and Mrs; Smith- Blanchard and daughter of Bristol, Conn., spent part of !ast week with his father, Stillman ilanchard. J. W. Untiedt and family were in Montpelier Friday. Mrs. Harriet Christopher is caring for Mrs. L. S. Darby and infant son on Brajfltree hill RANDOLPH Rev. and Mrs. W. S. Smithers, who have been in Massachusetts to attend the funeral of a relative, returned home on Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Cleveland re turned from Montpelier on Monday, where they were in camp with friends over Sunday, and are now at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Gladding for sev eral days. i Harry Eaton and wife of Boston have come to pass. their vacation here with their parents, passing a couplo of weeks before returning to Boston to reume business. Miss Annie Messer has returned to her home in Lebanon, N. H., after passing Sunday with Mrs. Frank Mann. The severe wind and rain storm of Sunday forenoon destroyed many fine maples in town. Mrs. Wedgwood lost a part of onej one at the G. A. Osha place was also broken down, and W. II. Gladding also lost one, besides several others which were blown down by the severe wind. Rev. F. S. Tolman left Monday for Massachusetts to pass his vacation, for the most part with his relatives at Wa- tertown, but will finally join his wife at ! Diinbarton, N. H. The Baptist church will be opened through his absence, Rev. R. H, Moore taking his congregation from the Methodist church over there and he will supply the pulpit. It is un derstood that this arrangement will also hold good for Mr. Moore's vacation, which will come later, and Mr. Tolman will supply for. him. H. A. Skinner of Boston joined his family here the last of the week, and was an over-Sunday visitor with them. He will return, but they will remain for most of the summer. Ensign and Mrs. Fred Williams are passing several weeks here with Mr. and Mrs. Jehicl Williams. Mr. Williams has just returned from overseas and has been on duty in the navy for more than a year. John Rogers of Northficld was in town over Sunday with his wife and son, who are now at the home of Mrs. Rogers' parents, where she is assisting in the care of her mother, Mrs. II. D. In the return game with Lisbon, played at Wells River last Saturday, Wells Riv er was defeated 4 to 1. The last five innings were played in a heavy rain, which greatly hampered the playing. Mc Donald, for Wells River, pitched a good game, passing only one man and striking out nine. In the seventh inning, by ex ceptional good throwing, the Lisbon catcher caught three men at second base. The new arrangement of men was a suc cess and while there were several errors made on account of the wet ball, yet they were all excusable. Lisbon played a good game and showed more life than on the former game. McDonald struck out nine men and allowed only six hits. Wells River. Mrs. William Perry and daughter of Detroit, Mich., are spending a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Perry. Lieut. Col. and Mrs. V. W. Albert of Burlington were among the recent guests at Hale's tavern. John Lamere returned to his home last Saturday morning, Barney Mayhew, last Thursday. Both have seen considerable service overseas. Maurice Bigelow of Danville spent the week end at the home of Mrs. Charles Vineient. Albert Sault of Woodsville is taking his annual outing at Ticklenaked pond this week.
