T. Scott, former Burling tonian, who died at Loma Linda, on March 18, appeared under date of March 11) in the Redlands (Cal.) Daily Facts, a copy of which has just" been received: Major Edgar T, Scott, pioneer "resi dent of Redlands, gentleman and schol ar, paused away at Loma Linda lat night after an illness of several weeks. Major Scott came up from Long Beach several weeks ago, having been forced to leave there by illness. Major Scott had been a resident of Redlands much af the time for the past twenty-five years. He was known to hundreds here and wherever known he was liked. For years he was a tem perance worker and orator and there was not a happier man in the whole country than Major Scott when prohi bition became a reality. Major Edgar T. Keott was born on April 9, 1805, in Burlington, Vt., and was 84 years old at the time of his death. His early years were spent in Buffalo, N. V. Major and Mrs. Scott came to Redlands first in 1892, having come as the guests of Messrs. Smiley to hold a series of meetings here. At that time they bought the Scott homesite on West Highland avenue be tween San Jacinto and Monterey streets, and most of the time, since then their home was here, where they were widely loved and honored. When the Civil war broke out Major Scott got a substitute as his son was very ill at the time and he did not feel 'that he could leave him. Later he enlisted and was in the war when it closed, a member of the 2d U. S. cavalry. He was captured by Moreby but escaped and was fighting when the war endal. Ho was one of the cavalrymen on de tail to hunt for Wilkes Booth who shot Abraham Lincoln. After the war he went into business as an insurance adjuster. He had offices in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. He left this work and large salary to go into temperance work in response to many demands for his services. He was one of the most convincing speakers on temperance in the country at that time. , Major Scott considered the problem at great length as to his duty, wheth er he should continue his business or go into temperance work. One day while praying there was a knock at the door and a man "to plead with him to come and hold a series of meetings. That deckled Major Scott and the rest of his life was spent in the work. He was one of those who helped to make Kansas dry, giving over 1,000 lectures In that state. He was one to whom Frances Willard was devoted and she called him "my brother help er." He was in this work 30 years. He married Minnie R. Hodges in Moira, N. Y., 04 qear ago. There was a daughter, who died in infancy, and a son,, who died when he was 17 years of age. VL Si club is not a community affair but an annex of the Congregational church and call attention to the Catholic dis cipline, which forbids church members from participating in the activities of other churches. They say that until the Community house is made entirely non-sectarian, vith no clergvman from any church in control, but directed en tirely by a civic committee or board, such as thoac which control the hos pital and library and other public in stitutions. Catholics cannot partici pate therein. The reason for this, as explained by the local Catholic clergy, is that a conscientious Catholic believes that the Catholic church is 4he true church. Catholics cannot believe that one church is as good as another. They are forbidden to take part in the serv ices of other churches and when they are going to the Community house and taking part in the exercises of the clubs they are taking part in maMers belonging to another church, the Con gregational church. The board of governors of the Com munity house had no statement to make in respect to the situation.
