Last evening about 7:30 squad A of the Barre fire department responded to a fire call from 75 Prospert treet, the home of George L. dimming. A rag ing chimney fire in the four-tenement house had caused the occupants to send in the alarm. Tq this place the squad made a quick run, and after emptying the contents of two hand chemicals extinguished the blaze. The house is owned by E. T. Mower of thi city. Miss Evelyn Phelps, who for some months has been engaged in social service -work under the Red Cross at the United States naval hospital, Chel sea, Mass., arrived at the home of her father, H. A. Phelps, lat night and will remain in Barre for an indefinite time. A friend. Miss Margaret Hodges of Boston, a field worker for the Red Cross, who is in Vermont on a business trip, is expected at the Phelps home to-night for a visit. A surprise party was tendered to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Wiquest of Graaite ville Saturday evening, in honor of itheir 2Sth -wedding anniversary. The evening was enjoyably kpent playing cards and dancing, after which a dainty luncheon was served. At the i lose of the evening, in a few appropri ate remarks in commemoration of the occasion, Mrs. Herbert Harp presented the host and hostess a beautiful chair from their immediate family and a purse of money from their friends, to which they both feelingly responded. Miss Florence Holland, a teacher in the Barre schools, is soon to be mar ried to Frank Brady of Bakersfleld, and last Saturday evening a shower was given in ner nonor ai jionipum, i.ir party being described by the Mont pel-1 ier Argus as follows: "A shower was i itr ven in honor of -Miss riorence. On arriving there sue was great ly sur prised to find the house filled with a delegation of 30 io 40 young people from Barre, Xorthfield and Montpelier, and that the party was in her honor. Alexander Falconer, a prominent quarry owner of Quincy, Mass., is stopping at Hotel Barre while attend ing the wage conference being held at Montpelier between representatives of the Granite Producers' assoriation and the International Quarrymen's asso ciation. Mr. Falconer is a member of the committee of the Producers' a-o-ciation, being a delegate from the Quincy Quarry Owners' association. Papers were passed yesterday in the D. A. Perry Real Estate oflioe, where by Bessie H. Roach conveyed two par cels of properly in Graniteville, one be ing a cottage house with land connect ed, to Fred C. Donald.
