THE UAHHE DAILY TIMES, BAKKE. VT.. FRIDAY, MAY 21, 1920. ABOUT THE STATE Happening of Intereit from Different Section. " Mrs. Caroline Dorwln Reed, who died at Hinesburg Wednesday, was 95 years ai:d five cicntha old. James McCullough caught a 150 pound bear in a trap on the mountain in North Fayston a few days ago. Rev. C. W. Bishop of South Newfane hag been given a call to the pastorate of the Townshend Congregations ' church. Miss Corintha Mitchell wii badly burned by the exploding of an oil lamp at her home in Pittsford 10 days ago and, not recovering as she should, has been taken to a hospital for treatment. The social service commission of .he diocese of Vermont of the Episcopal church is considering the opening of a home in West Rutland for children who are under the supervision of the state board of charities. t Bigelow's drug store, the largest of its" kind in northern Vermont, was sold May 18 to Delos Buck, formerly connected with the Mad River Lumber Co. of Middlesex. A half interest in the business was owned by the widow of Charles F. Bigelow, late president of the Newport National bank. H. M. . Louthood of Newport owned the other ' half interest. The latter Will continue as manager of the store. Corp. Fred A. McGuin, who has a brother in Peru and a sister in Chitten den, died Feb. 15 in Vladivostok, Si beria. Corp. McGuin served over two I years In the World war, was discharged " in June, 1919, and then re-enlisted for . foreign service, sailing for Siberia in September, 1919. He spent most of his life in Daoby. A funeral service in his ; memory was held in the Methodist church in Landgrove May 14. " Henry Guimond was badly crushed Thursday morning at the George H. (Cross company storehouse in St. Johns - bury, which slipped off its foundations ithe afternoon before. Mr. Guimond, with other men, was helping to remove the contents of the building when bags of flour fell from a large pile and threw him against a row of flour barrels. He could not extricate himself and one leg iand his spine were crushed. He was ' taken to a hospital for examination. ; Because Michael Moran, an employe tat the Brooks house, Brattleboro, was 'refused a loan of $3 to get his watch out of hook by Manager George K. : Sherman, Moran left the hotel Wednes day and on reaching the sidewalk drew tfrom his pocket a bottle which con 'tained denatured alcohol, but which ,'was nearly empty, and hurled it through the plate glass front of the hotel. He was arrested and later, will be arraigned on a charge of disturbing the peace. ASKS CLEMENT FOR PROOF That Vermont Constitution Calls for ' Referendum on Federal Amendment. '' Governor P. W. Clement has received the following letter from Mrs. Lillian If. Olzendam, bearing upon the suf frage situation and its relations to the rmiieh-tlked-of special session: Hon. Percival . Ctement, Montpelier, Vermont. Your Excellency: Replying to your letter of May 7, 1 am pleased to con firm the telegram sent you on April -'30 as follow : Have Tead your letter of the 26th with much interest. You state that you lack assurance that present legis lature would submit question to vote -of people of Vermont and therefore you deny request for special session. In case suffragists submit signed state ment from proper number of represen tatives and senators that they will ote to submit matter of ratification to people will you call special session?" . Upon receipt of your letter of April 26, it seemed to me that the particular point stressed by you was the fact that you had no assurance that if a special session were called that the question of ratification would be sub mitted to the people. As perhaps you know, we have al ready polled the legislators four times and "each time the reul!a were satis factory to our cause. Those of us who re interested in woman suffrage feel that before conidpring the expense and effort entailed by itaking another poll of the legialators, "we must be very sure that such a step a implied in your letter would be legal, and, therefore, binding. In giving the matter your immediate consideration, as you suggest in your letter of the seventh, will you not point out to me any section in the constitu tion of Vermont which provides for the ratification of a federal amend ment by referendum to the people of the state t You will remember that in a convention with me early in April you told me the attorney general was to be in Montpelier the following week and that you would consult him as to his opinion on above point. As you re the only person who can legally obtain an opinion from the attorney general on this matter, may I not ask thwt you will let me know what his opinion is regarding ratiftration by ref erendum? Waiting your reply, I remain, Liliian IL Oliendam. SURRENDERED BY BONDSMEN. Jeha F. Casey of Brattleboro Charged with Statutory Offense. Brattleboro, May 21. Tohn F. Primary Vote Still Slow. Somerset has filed with the secre tary of state its report of the number of votes cast in thai town Tuesday; and Wood was the unanimous choice of the five voters who attended the primaries.. This is almost the usual vote cast in that town ao that in one town at least a good showing was made. At the last presidential elec tion 11 votes were cast, of which seven were Republican and four Democratic. The vote for governor two years ago was, Republican six, Democratic two. Last nig'it some 220 towns had made their report to the secretary of state. These have, been compiled by coun ties, but not a single county was com pleted so no addition ha been made; but it was expected to-day's mail will bring enough o a batter showing can be made upon the entire vote cast, and it is expected that Leonard Wood will have one-half of the total cast. The Theoretical Saver who can do better with his money than to take insurance for the protection of his family is invited It study probate records to show what men do on the average. I suffered principally from chronic indigestion and my condition was to bad I had to spend half of my time in bed from sheer weakness. In spite of all the medicine I took I could not pofsibly get any relief and I be came so nervous and unstrung that at times I could hardly realize what I was doing. I just had no appetite at all nd suffered terribly nearly all the time with indigestion and was really in a very bad way physically. If I did eat a little something I would always have a miserable, dictressed feeling afterward and I tell you I was going down hill pretty fast.
