THFi BAHKK DAILY TBIES, BARRE. VT.y THURSDAY, JULY 1, 1920 ABOUT THE STATE Happening of Interest from , Deferent Sectiooi. George Varnille of Norwich, Conn., alias Oorjze Nichols of Coventry, was caught in White River Junction Mon day after escaping by automobjlo from Coventry where lie robbed his employ ers, Fred Barlow and Forrest Gleason, of $.V0. Varnille pleaded guilty to the theft and was sentenced to serve a year in the state's prison at Windsor. , Oorge A. Stevens, superintendent of the Charles M.- Davis A Co. woolen mill at Xorthfleld Falls, Inst one hattd in an accident at the mill June 25. Think ing a cylinder had stopped, revolving, he put hi, hand into it, crushing the hand, so badly that amputation was necessary. Adin F. Miller of llummerston and George L.' Dunham of Brattleboro are seeking the nomination as the two senatora from Windlyim county to the next legislature. Mr. Dunham repre sented Brattleboro in 1917 and 1919. Mr. Miller served as representative from TJummerston in 1888 and 1919. - He has 'been town clerk 20 years, town treas urer for 18 years and deputy sheriff for 25 years. Edward W. Work Accomplished by the Governor Graham Fund. Earlv in the spring, W. H. Jeffrey, as secreta'ry of the board of charities and probation, sent to the teachers .in the schools letters asking them to rec ommend the names of children who need medical attention to improve their liealtn as set forth in the letters wh'uh Mr. Jeffrey sent each teacher. The reslt was that some 40 children were selected and of that number about 20 are now under care and have gone to hospitals for treatment or for opera tion. The payment of these expenses is met by fund which come from what is known a the Governor Graham fund, because he originated the idea and helped start it. One of the inter esting things about this fund is that at times it has been below $5 with a considerable amount of bills for op erations or treatment to be met within a few davs and it is very surprising to note that each time money has been forthcoming to meet, these require ments and without solicitation. Some, who have been following the work, have already made tneir imra gut. Those range from small sums to hun dreds of dollars. A report of how money was spent goes to each contributor and in cases, where, say $."0 is sent, and the donor wauts an individual report of where the money went, that is given him, showing just what was done for each child. The money was used to relieve suffering. This work has noth ing to do with the money which ti e state provides and is entirely outside the regular work as set forth in the provisions of the statutes. Renew Teachers' Probationary Certificates. Dr. M. B. Hillegas. commissioner of education, has sent the following letter to the school superintendents: At a recent meeting of the sUte board of education the following action was taken;- - - - - ' " . "That the commissioner of education be authorized to renew probationary certificates for the third time, it being understood that this is an emergency regulation due to the fact that the stata is not maintaining sum mer schools for the summer of 1920. This regulation shall be effective for the school year 1920-21." This action is tsken in order that the board may be assured of sufficient teachers in rural schools in the coming year. ' HUMOR HAS ITS PLACE In National Conventions Though Dele gates May Be Jaded. , Chicago, July 1. The long hours of oratory that mark every national po litical convention may bore the tired delegates and spectators nearly to the point of exhaustion, but never kill their sense of humor. Occasionally a witty sentence or a quick rejoinder has been credited with having had a great er effect on the final reult than all the oratory of the picked spell-binders. At the recent Republican gathering at Chicago, Frank B. Willis, former governor of Ohio, was nominating Sena tor Warren G. Harding for the presi Annnv tYhin was far down in the list. The 13,000 sweltering persons, who . ... , rt ,! 1 1 i:..,.n.J crowded tne pig touseum, uu iitwn with only half-interest to more than five hours of fervid oratory when Will- 1 1 is, closing ins speecn, sain : v en, ooj and girls, let's nominate Harding." The friendly humor brought' a ready response. The next day, when the landslide to ward HardiVg began, an Ohio admirer of the senator, who had inscribed the sentence on a huge sheet of cardboard dropped it from the gallery. It made an instantaneous hit. Earlier in the contest, a negro dele gate from Oklahoma, appearing before the credentials committee at 3 o'clock in the morning to press his claim for a seat, put new life into that body and won his point by a remark. Having told how the "lily white" side had held its convention in a hotel from which negroes were barred by the proprietor, he said: "Why, gentlemen. In Oklahoma ther's "'Jim Crowiem' from the hen house to the hotel." In the laugh that followed a motion to seat the contestant was carried unanimously.' WILL HANDLE MUNITIONS.
