Mr. Irwin has been superin tendent at Barton for 14 years and is a graduate of Dartmouth. "brleans, in the town of Barton, is holding a four-day celebration of the founding of the village 100 years ago. It was known until recently as Barton Landing. Thousands of dollars have been spent on decorations. An open-air theatre to accommodate 2,000 people fits been erected in the public Bquare far entertainments and addresses. ' Rural Mail Carrier C. H. Stratton, who, in accordance with government orders, was to retire as mail carrier from the Enosburg Falls post-office Aug. 20, on account of the age limit, has been granted a two-year extension of service and he is as usual serving the patrons of his route. C. R. Brown, an other carrier affected by the same post office order, expects to receive the two year extension, although while waiting results a substitute is covering his route. The End of a Perfect Day ESTATE OF JOSIAH GALE. GREAT STONE SERPENT. ' Harold, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Levine of Essex Junction, stepped on a 12-penny nail, which was driven into a plank and the nail was forced tip through the inetep, being wedged in so closely that he had to use consider' able strength on the board to pull the nail from his foot. The nail was new and free from rust and it is not supposed any permanent injury will result. Another orchid has been added to the already long list kept at the Fairbanks museum in St. Johnsbury. A great serpent 1,300 feet long, built of earth and stone, a symbol of the religion of ancient peoples, stands a few miles from here as the most interesting and important earthwork left by the mound builders of Ohio. uivun.w iu m ibiuii vu.uiaca rfi'i ... I, I J 1 1 .,.nnn.l. Wto K . mo.,,! mil, j ..... , , . ..if.,.,. Tl. The Cossacks population in the terri tories which once constituted the Kns sian empire numbers nearly 3,000,000 and the action just taken against bol shevism by the Don, Kuban, Tcrck and Astrakhan Cossacks is likely to be followed by a similar declaration of war on the Soviets from the Cossacks farther north and in the far west. It has been claimed by the bolshe viki that their doctrines won out be cause the Russian peasants, in their ORDER LIME NOW Manufacturing Companies Not Always Able to Fill Orders on Short Notice. I The extension service of the Univer sity of V ermont is in possession of a letter recently received from the direc tor of the eastern bureau of the Na tional Lime association relative to the difficulty under which many of the lime manufacturing companies of this eastern section of tl country are laboring in endeavoring to meet the agricultural requirements of the soil treatment period of the late summer tnd fall of this year. The difficulties are due largely to the coal and car shortage. The letter contains sugges tions as to how the farmers may be sure of getting lime in sufficient quan tity. During the spring of 1920, it is esti mated that fully 30,000 tons of lime on order from the farmers of the Xew England and eastern seaboard states failed delivery, due to inadequate transportation facilities with which to meet the demands of the agricultural trade during the ruh pf the spring planting period. It ia physically im possible for the lime-producing com panies to maintain stock of material .ufticieut to or triply at all times with the shipping directions of the farmers, tbit resulting not-only from the short age of car, but to a considerable ex tent, also, from the shortage of fuel ind labor. It is realised that the farmer, also, t short of labor and nt his lime It the time convenient to handle it. It is Mid that if the fanner, will try to order their lime, stuUting early lelivery for-this fall s apiliration, ao ts to rfresi (hipment orr a Wcer seriod. it will h r-rMbl. with the aid f the railroads. hih are giving this tmiM.It -referent is treatment in r supply, to pretty well take care of .ia dr.in.J builders for privacy in performing their ancient rites, the massive reptile winds gracefully back from a glen to higher land. The serpent's head rests upon a rock platform which presents a precip itous face to the descending sun and Is about 100 feet high. The jaws of the mouth are widely extended in the act of swallowing an egg, represented by an oval ridge of earth. As the mound builders shaped the body they caused it to make four large folds as it tapered back to the tail, which is folded in three complete and close coils. The land about this curious relic of primitive days is low at the head, but gradually ascends toward the tail. There is ample room on all sides for a gathering of many people and the be lief is expressed that the idol worship pers gathered on all sides of their altar to pour forth praise, or beseech for giveness and blessings from the beauti fully hideous god of their own crea- j tion. "The Serpent Mound," was pur chased by Professor F. W. Putnam of the Peabody museum, Cambridge, Mass., in 1887, along with about 70 acre of adjacent land and shortly aft- j erward a beautiful public park was laid on the ground. Thus in present days the spot of reverence sacred to the people who preceded civilir-ation in the nation ia used aa a playground for picnickers and pleasure seekers. The deed to the land is vested in the mu seum attached to Harvard university. Those who have made a study of the work of the mound builders have esti mated that in Ohio, alone, there are oyer 10,000 mounds and from 1,500 to 2,000 enclosures standing as monu ments to their work. By the study of ancient implements and burial places found in and near these mystery hills it has been found possible to form a conception of their life. Cossacks example shdws that, when free to choose, peasant Russia 'ias no more use for an autocracy, and least of all for one which masquerades un der the name of communism. The torth which fell from the hands of Kolrhak, Denekin and Yudenich has now been grasped by Wrangel, and with better chances of success. It is easy to jeer at hopes which were doomed to disap pointment, easier still to predict a new failure. But the movement for t'ie emancipation of Russia, initiated with the overthrow of czardom, resumed again in the fight against sovietism, has behind it the irresistible might of a whole nation and "the unconquerable mind of man." Taking new birth from delay, and surging up all the more insistently after defeat, it is destined to grow -in volume and power until the usurpers are ousted and the Rus sian people have come into their own: For freedom's battle, once begun, Bequeathed by bleeding aire to son, Though baffled oft, ia ever won. Bos ton Herald. Destiny. Two Boston business men were dis cussing the closing of some of our woolen mills and one remarked that it was fortunate that the sheep never got together and decided not to grow any more wool. "Oh," said the other man, "they probably realize that like the con sumer they are reared to be fleeced." Boston Transcript. Auction Sale A Fine Lot of Land to be Sold at 4 P. M. Viewing that lithe and sturdy figure wearing the war rior's breastplate and carrving the ex plorer's axe, the face tense with in domitable resolution, you involumari ly think of the men who first broke a path for Russian colonization from the Urals to the Facific ocean nuarlv threa ecnturies ago. You think also of tha military strength which these born fighters lent to the "empire of a than- santl years" from its very beginnings. whether as defendera of its boundaries from Asiatic barbarians or as frontier-line soldier in it numerous cam paigns. After 1873, under ctardom, the Cossack was required to spend at leat twenty of his years in military life; three of them went in prepara tory training, twelve to service in the art ire army and five in the reserve forces. But the "cowlioy of the F us-inn steppe," as he has been called, was far from complete absorption in the art and practice of war. With a de cided st toward "self determination," he worked out a complete ecienns of self ernment in hi villages, decid ing by tote what taxes were to be levied, who was t be his "'atam' cr elder, and by whose judicial wiiilom the community disputes were to b settled. Ia return for contributions of men to the army, the Coisacks iwived larps grants of land: they showed j great enterprise ia farming, and it is the testimony of e-bteners that w-hol 1 ed'jratmn in their "voiekos" has j rear bf J higher stage of rKnntrr i than in most other r "f Rnsia.
