Joseph Hamilton of Whit Riv er Junction has announced his candi dacy for re-elect inn as chaplain in the House at the coming session of Jhe leg islature. He has been for 60 years a Methodist preacher in Vermont and for six rears was presiding elder of the St. Johnsbury district. . When the two inches -of snow that came last Tuesday night slid off the roof of the Congregational church in Springfield the next morning, it land- , e,d on the top of an automobile that was standing between the church and ' the next building. The top was mished in, the windshield was broken and the ear was otherwise damaged, while , ; Walter Stevens, who was sitting in the car, was hurt about the head by the framework of the top and had one hand cut by broken glass from the windshield. It is alleged that the men, who,! appeared to be odrtnary traveling men, J had been trying to get inc wnissey to New York on the night train. MOUNTAIN LODGE APPRECIATED. Travelers on Mansfield Trail Were Pleased at Accommodations. The building of Taft lodge on Mt. Mansfield, just under the east side of the chin, has already proved that it supplied a need. Opening Aug. 16, until the caretaker left on. Sept. 21, 427 vis itors registered at the lodge, of whom 100 stayed over night. Next season many who will have learned of the lodge and its modest charges will seize this opportunity for a night on Mt. Mansfield, with its wonderful sun sets and sunrises, which might other wise never have been possible to them. In addition to its summer us, the following letter tells how the Hospice f Sf Hornnrr! in the Alnine hdahtsN may have a modest imitator with the bark on in the Green mountains: 20 Wa'.ker St., Cambridge, 33, Ma's. Nov. 10, 1920. Mr.'G. A. Mathers, 307 Main St., Bennington, Vt. Dear Sir: I have just completed with .a old friend a walking trip that will always be memorable to us both. Seven days we spent in the mountains on the nf the Green Mountain club. Storting from Cambridge Junction, by way of Mor.es' mill, Smuggler's Noted and Barnes' camp, we climbed Mount Mansfield then made our way south, over Camel's Hump, Mpunt KHcn and Mount Abraham, ,nd- ended -at -the Henry Davis farm near Lincoln. We climbed Mount Mansfield at the end of our first day and reached the CElihu B. Taft) lodge in the midst of a tremendous blizzard. Never shall I for get our first sight of that beautiful lit tie log house when, tired and hungry, we first stumbled upon it in the blind ing sleet and snow. Dark, forbidding eVouds enveloped the mountain and, realizing that only a few more minutes t of daylight remained, we were strain- whrti a turn in the trail revealed the little house standing there among the firs, snow drifting from the eaves and eddying around the corners, while torn masses of clouds half concealed it as they hurried by. It was like part of a fairy story. Opening the hospitable door, we found beds, bedding, kettles, plates and spoons and firewood sawed and split ready to burn. Soon the savory aroma of bacon and coffee filled theeoom and, with it, expressions loud and long of gratitude to the Green Mountain club. ft should be added that, next morn ing, we replenished the wood supply, washed dishes, swept out and duly re suspended the bedding from the raftere, we.ll out of reach of the thrifty, but misguided porcupine. My companion, Armin Klmendorf (of the Haskilite corporation, chamber of commerce building, Chicago, 1)1.1, and myself wish in some way to ex press our appreciation of what the Green Mountain club is doing to make "trailing" in the Green mountains a wholly delightful experience, and we are accordingly remitting the enclosed mall check to be used by the officers of the club in furtherance of its aims. Very sincerely vours, George Porter-Paine. No Medical Examination ' has to be passed by "those buying an nuities. No matter how long you live, you are paid a definite income ''on suit us. During the evening it became appar ent that Governor Clement Intends to deed the clock to the state, with con ditions attached so that it will be like lv to remain in the executive office. The clock sets where a radiator wast for years and the picture of the late Governor Fairbanks has been moved to provide room for the clock. It adds to the beauty of the room, breaking the sameness of the many pictures in the room. . It stands about 12 feet high " ' about four feet square at the base. With each hour the clock plays a tune. Friday" evening it played "Jenny Jones!" It playa, a different tune for each dav in the week. Sunday it plays "Old Hundred." It chimes the quarter hours, shows the day of the week, month of the year, position of the moon and gives other information. At 10 o'clock it automatically stops strik ing and begins again at 7 in the morn ing. Mrs. Stella Daniels started walking from Little Rock three, weeks ago, lead ing her cow and calf, intent upon mak ing her home in Memphis and earning a livelihood through the sale of milk and butter. The 173-mile trip proved so Ir-.borious that the calf died on the way after the trip had lasted only a short time, and the cow became ex hausted when only eleven miles out. The woman is staying with Mrs. Mar tha Wallace, police matron, until other arrangements can be made. Mrs. Daniels was given a lift for a short distance and tied her cow and calf to a waeon belonging to a man and his wife by the name of Brown. The wason was heavily laden with household goods and Mrs. Daniel was forced to continue her walk after a Rhort distance when the Brown familv located in their new home at Wid ener. After about a week had passed the calf died and Mrs. Daniels and her cow resumed the long hike. Frequent stops were made for rest and repast. When only 11 miles from Memphis the cow became exhausted and was left with a Mr. Haves. She then started on the last lap of her journey and reached the Grand Central station Saturday night. Mrs. Wallace was notified of Mrs. Daniels' arrival and Mrs. Whitt nore. assistant matron, went to the station to take charge of the new comer, It is Mrs. Daniels' intention to lo cate somewhere in the outskirts of the citv, where she can keep her cow and II milk, and butter for, a living. She is destitute of funds and was forced through circumstances and not through choice to make the trip afoot instead of in comfort on a railroad train. Mrs. Daniel is a widow with no chil dren. She is about 43 years old and weighs about 450 pounds. She is about five feet eight inches in height. Her sturdy constitution has stood her in good "stead in making the long trip from the Arkansas capital to Mem phis. Memphia Commercial Appeal.. "So Casey had a scrap with his wife and got arrested."
