j ABOVT THE STATE Happening of Interest froo Different Sections. Governor James Hartness has juet Invented a screw thread comparator which is considered quite remarkable. Emmett Sullivan and William Oero, bolh of Burlington, were arrested on Wednesday and ilaced in jail on a charge of incendiarism. Two recent Burlington fires are charged to them. Three Enosburg Falls men, painting a block, were thrown to the ground when the staging broke and all were made unconscious. Though covered with bruises as a result of their 20-foot fall, no bones were broken. ' During Sunday's electrical storm, " William St. Armouf of Colchester lost four valuable Holstetrt calves, which were struck by lightning. During the same storm a new silo on the farm waa stfuck and competely ruined. ' Henry Tatro of Huntington nearly severed his left hand between the wrist and elbow Wednesday as he waa work ing, in the sawmill. In. reaching for something, he stumbled and fell, and then in trying to save himself he pushed his hand on the saw. The hand had to be amputated. . , " Mrs. George W. Akers, wife of the Methodist pastor at Johnson, died at the Fanny Allen hospital,'' Winooski, last week after an operation. She and her husband and little daughter came to the United States from England two years ago and Mr. Akers had since preached in Johnson. t . " " Mrs. D. Gabaaky of Orleans, on ftligh Ing from the night train at that place last Sunday, fell between the platform and the tracks and remained there un til the entire train had passed hen She was unconscious from fright when an eye witness to the accident rescued her and has been very ill ever since. Mildred Kingsland, four-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Kingsland of North Ferrisburg, met with a bad accident one day recently while leaning over a, well to watch the drawing up of the pump chain. The end of the fiihpole which was being used to get the chain penetrated one eye and at a Burlington hospital the eye was at once removed. Isaac Gingras and Clyde Charette, on their way to a ball game in St. Johns bury in a Chevrolet car, were struck by an engine which was coa-sting down grade, the accident happening at a pri vate crossing, at the ball grounds, so that no warning was sounded by the engine, as it is not necessary at a pri vate crossing. A house obscured a view of the railroad track and when the men first saw the engine it was upon them. The car was thrown down a bank, with one of th men beneath it. Neither re ceived injuries except cuts and bruises. NEW BRATTLEBORO TAXPAYER. Tax Exemption Expiration Puts Fort Dununer Concern at Head. The 10-year tax exemption of the Fort Pummer cotton miJl property in Brattleboro having expired the Brattle boro listers have set the property into the tax list at a valuation of $350,000, making the corporation the largest tax payer in Brattleboro, the tax being larger than that of the Estey Organ Co. or the Dunham Brothers Co. Hepburn Decorated By Japan J. Foreno-Lacalle Gets "Appointments. . Middlebury, May 27. Hon. A. Bar ton Hepburn, 71, of Middlebury col lege, and Professor J. Moreno-Laealle, head of the Spanish department, have recently been highly honored. A cable has been received from the American embassy in Japan that" the Hon. A. Barton Hepburn, 71, who has been vis iting" in Japan, was decorated on April 13, by the emperor, with the Order of the Sacred Treasure. This is the high est order which has been conferred of lafte years upon any American ,by Japan. Mr, Hepburn is highly pleased with the hospitality accorded him by the Japanese during his stay in the Orient. Professor J. Moreon-Lacalle has re ceived three recent appointments. At the last meeting of the New England Modern Language association, which he attended as a delegate from Middle buryhe was elected vice-president of the association. Word has also been re ceived of his appointment as a repre sentative of the board of extension studiee of the department instruction of Spain, with' authority to constitute at Middlebury college a committee of three with himself as chairman, for the purpose of cooperating with the institute of the Spains of New York to promote the stud of Spanish in the United States.
