': The statement in another column of to-day's paper from Major H. N'el lon Jackson of Burlington is inter preted to mean that he 1 not to 1 a candidate for the United States sena torial nomination as wnt to Sen ator Carroll S. Pare, thus, setting at rest the varioua rumors and mt.na tion that have been heard during the past six months or more. Major Jack son declares he feels that he Ought to continue hi work toward the re-habili-tation of the disabled veteran of the World war, a work to which he ha devoted himself enthusiasth-ally for some time and a work, hv thus way, which is not completed. Therefore, he declines to be considered longer ui a candidate for the position and suggest President .Guy W. Bailey of the t.'ni versity of Vermont as a man of the right calibre for the senatorial position There is no doubt of the capacity of President Bailey to perform the duties of the office acceptably, but it is scarce ly probable that he would consider at this time a return to official life '' peeially in view of the fact that Ver. mont has a man of congressional evpe rience who can measure up to the re quirements and who is an avowed can didate for the position. It looks now as if the Republicans would have only one real candidate for the position and that one i.-t Representative Frank L. Greene.
