It wasn't a case of come, eat and go, but rather more like a family gathering, where young and old mingled in pleasant so cial intercourse. During the evening coffee, sandwiches, cakes, ice cream, wa termelon and home-made candy were on sale and were liberally purchased by the company. Howard Ueake enter tained with two humorous vocal selec ts. He was accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Ernest Batchclier. MONTPELIER City Council Lett Contract for Mechan ic Street Bridge. The city council voted last night to autlionze Alderman George Carpen ter to sign a contract for the construc tion of the Mechanic street bridge on Dcuau ot the city.. The Berlin Con struction company of Berlin, Conn,, will construct the bridge, and has agreed to have it in place ready for travel on September 7 or GO davs from July 7. The bridge will have a tifl feet span and will be 18 feet wide. The cost' will be $2,770. Gasoline pump licenses were granted to Joseph G. Abair, for two, one at 108 Mam street and the other at 83 State street! A. D. Harris, 20 Elm street; A. D. Hayes, 14 Main streets J. J. Williams place not specified; and W. C. Eighty-nino children from New York will reach Montpelier' July i8 and be entertained by families in this sec tion for a short time during the sum mer weeks as a result of the work which the committee, of which Mrs. W. S. Smith is chairman, has been able to accomplish. The committee are well phased with the result of their first effort along this line as far as Mont pelier ; is concerned, although in the western part of the state, through the efforts of the New York Tribune, this fresh air work has been actively car ried out for some years.
