Wall opinion of the New wralern Mtule. W. B. Wall, a former North Carolinian but who now proudly writes the name of the new Slate of Washington ufter his name, is shaking lunula with old friends in Asheville and vicinity. Mr. Wall left the Old North State in INH4 and went to Washington Territory. He took up a homestead west ol'theCns omle Mountains in Lewi county, went to work with u hearty good will anil now niirvtv his broad acres anil the bunk lie aiunts they have brought them with a jieat deal of satisfaction, Mr. Wall is in love with his new home mil has never had oceasiou to regret his .'Imtme. He was born in Shelby away buck in ism and lived in the initnciliate vicinity until lie decidvd in his old uge to follow Horace tircclev's advice to young men uitl grow up with the wild and woolly West. "My section of the country," he said, 'was not alKcteil by the recent heavy uow storm. We saw but little of it al though on the east side ol the mountains .here was some trouble. We have lull itile winter west of the Cascades. It is loo near the Pacific ocean to get very .old and remain long. Crops are never iijtired by cold weathrr ami when you ,itit the scetl in the ground you can csti nate on jour crop with certainty. That is on the .vest side ol'themountains. On .he cast side is the stock raising country. I'here cattle are lrctiieutly killed by tilt reezing weather und the winters are isuully severe. "The climate is grand," he said, "it is never very warm, and we have hut few enl cold days in winter. And evendur ng the warmest days of the summer sea ion I can sit in my yard and see the now on the peaks ol the Cascade." Mr. Wall is forced to ndmit that foi ecnery Western North Carolina is lar .tiierior to that of his new home, and he ins only the kindest words lor the Stale vlostot his old friends have gone before nut ami he sees but few familiar faces. (lOHIP OP THE DAVi One of the prettiest drives in this vicin ity is enjoyed by the people who ride up over Beaumont and then down along the rather heavy but level road thut skirts the bank of the Swannunoa river. The pretty river, with its tree-fringed borders and its foam-topped rapids at intervals, appeuls to every lover of the artistic and the beautiful, and its nnme, which is a free pronunciation of an Indian original, is oftentimes translated bv pocticobscrv- ers in a great many different ways to chime with differing poetic ideas. One of the oldest and best informed citizens of Asheville translated the name the other dav for an inquirer. He said the river was named by the Cherokee Indians, and that they named it to signify, by sound, the "swoosh" or "swoop" of the wings of a flock of buzzards that according to tradition once nested on the river bunks, rising with majestic sweep at sunrise to fly up or down the stream. Hence Swan iiiinou would appear to mean merely the swoop or sweep of the buzzard's wing, or the eagle's wing us more poetic spirits may cull it. "Asheville ought to be a good town for theatrical trouirs when the new theatre is completed," said a Northern gentleman who takes an interest in afiairs of the stage. "There is a big class of people here, native and imported, who will be only too glad to take in every attraction that the new house presents if they once take the theatre-going fever. The present place of entertainment has certain disad vantages that are well understood, but it seems to have a good-sized patronage lor all that. Let the new place start off with a resounding Iwom, get the people into the itlea of going, present a reliable line of attractions for them to see, and there is no possible reason to doubt that one of the gold mines of Western North Carolina will be developed right here in Asheville, and the people who will gather the big nuggets will be the men and women who make their living and some limes their fortunes in entertaining the numerous class of Americans who must lie amused. A good deal of Northern money has re cently hern put into land in llarrimnn. Tcnn,, where lnrgr sales of lots for spec ula ti ve pur miscs ha vc recen t ly been m ude. Many Northern dollars have also gone into land in and about various towns and cities in Western North Carolina, and naturally Asheville has obtained its lair share. There is a certain class of cap italists and controllers of investments in the North who arc restless and venture some by nature and instinct, and the greater the distance that thev get from home iu making an investment or a sing ulation the better satisfied they are. New places and small "boom" towns appeal to this class with an almost irresistible force, and the laud sales at Harriman were attended, in ierson or by proxy, by a large number of speculators and in vestors from Northern cities, all eager to try another whirl of fortune's wheel. People who sat by the fire and shivered last Sunday during the "blizzard," and who expressed their opinion of such un reasonable Southern weather with voices Inirly trembling with cold, failed to do the Curolinus justice. The very next day the weathrr had moderated to such tin extent that people who rode and drove found it ncccssurv to use but compara tively light wraps, and by Tuesday morn ing the average man strolled about town with either a very light overcout or none ut ull, aud the average woman was at tired in quite sunitnrrish garments. How often do such conditions of warmth and sunlight and general excellence of atmos phere obtain at any time in March in Northern towns f Jaat Little Mistake. A ' negro would-be-Benedict appeared before Clerk Mnckey yesterday and got a marriage license for himself and Lucy Gray. To-day he was again in the office to trade his document for another. "Y'ou see, boss," he said, "the woman I wanted to marry was staying at Lucy Gray's. I got the name mixed up, that was all." He was accommodated with a docu ment corrected to date. It isn't the oast vear of Harrison's ad ministration, disappointing as it has been, that agitates the public mind; it is the dread of the next three year. The hands of the executive have been tied by need of legislative co-operation until now, so that the capacity for serious mis chief was circumcised. But now the whole machinery of government can be made to answer to the impnlse of the man at the helm. The high handed pro ceedings in Congress indicate the temper und tone of the policy determined upon. Bolstered lo Death. I. A. The Provident Sittings is the creation of its president, Slieppnrd Homans, wnose nign reputation us an actuary is not confined to this country by any mean. He devised its plans on scien tific principles, and arranged its rates with a view of affording life insurance at actual cost, and be has been eminently successful. His plans have brought life it surauce within the reach of many here tofore unable to carry it, and have on owered the wants of those desiring sim ple life insurance at a low cost, and nt the same time on a safe basis. The Provident Savings offers protection nt the lowest possible cost, and its financial ability to meet its obligations as they mature, are unquestioned.
