The Washington correspondent of the

of a scene in botith Carolina which will
probably never again be witnessed in the
South. At "Rdgewood" the ancestral

One is uot surprised that our states
men look fat and sleek. The daily ses

mere picnics for them. They chat.

and then it was sworn to betore a uotary
public and published in the 1'icavune."
But the end was not yet, by considera
ble. One of the Times-Democrat report
ers referred to ns being about to torture
the nwm with a rone swore out "an
affidavit charging Mr. Thomas L. Ka- I
pier, manager, and Major Nat. Hurhank.
managing editor of the Picayune, and
all the parties who signed the affidavit
with criminnl libel. The accused all sur
rendered and were paroled."
Nor did this end the matter. As might
have been expected, perhaps, a lawyer
became mixed up in the unsavory mess
and was badlv beaten by a reporter at
the office of the paper. Then the law
yer's Inends appeared on the scene and
a free tight, and no odds asked on any
side, followed.
It is ol course the business of newspa
pers to record, not to make, news; but
the fnct has been well-nigh forpotten in
the offices of the "great" newspapers of
tn.ihiv. The oresent tendency is to hud
north poles, lost citizens i-i Africa, mur
derers In the swamps, and scns.itions ir
everything. The modern "great" news
paper of the present moment is a
lund of rroBs between a dime mu
seum and a chird-rate detective agency
with a dash of clairvoyance thrown ii
for full measure. All this is called en
terprise," but the most of it issioiply the
result of teverish misconception of what
journalism at its best can and should be.
We doubt not it can be proven that,
while the New Orleans reporters are
usurping the business ot the sheriff, there
is news of real moment just under then
own noses that will entirely escape them
The New Orleans newspapers were "en
terprising" for years before one of them
could be found brave enough to denounce
the lottery business that was disgracing
the City before the civilized world.
We are not anxious that newspapers
should again become what they were
years ago and what a very few still are
journals that made little or no effort
t collect the news of the day, but were
mainly devoted to elaborate and ex
tended comment on lar-a way-matters.
But the dignity and sell respect and
cleanliness of the old time weekly news
paper might be imitated today with
benefit to every reader if not to the
pockets ot the publisher.
The present condition of the two lead
ing New Orleans newspapers may well
cause members of the profession every
where to pause and reflect.

One of the most disagreeable features
of the change of schedule on the railroad
was to deter the coming of The Ashe

paper, to the next day. Previously we
got it on the same afternoon and thus
kept close up with the news, for if there
is any tou may always expect to see it
