She is a technician in a doctor's ofii?c, competent and well paid. The patient lias just received a clean bill of health from the doctor and is in a mood for pleasant banter. "How long have you worked here?" he asked. ' Since 1923," she answers. "Ain't that awful?" "Sounds like a pretty good record to me," volunteers the patient. "But I am not married," she wails. And the heartless patient who has been assured that all of his organs are functioning 100 per cent, laughs uproariously at her naive admission. Not so funny to the feminine mind; for in words of a lady philoso pher there are just three big thrills in a woman's life: the first, when she gets married; the second, when she moves in her new homo, and the third, when she has her first baby. She is quite dependent upon a man tor two of these. If she is smart and thrifty she may have a home without benefit of His Majesty's largess. No wonder the lassies begin early and work late, looking for lads who are supposed to carry the pass keys to happiness. No wonder they look enviously at their sisters who are lucky in the hunt. No wonder they think "it's awful" when thirteen years have slipped by and the boy friends have slipped by, too. But?a lot of losers are luckier than the sisters they envy. For some lads carry pass keys to misery and wretchedness such as no in dependent single woman ever dreamed of. Perhaps they come under the head of compensations, these blessings of singleness, but they are blessings none the less. There is the good old pay envelope and every penny of it belongs to the person who collects it. There is nobody to question her right to throw it away or to put it by. When the day's work is done there is no moody man to be cajoled and catered to. When she lies down to sleep there is no crying baby to disturb her dreams. When she wakes up there arc no fretting problems of children's diet and discipline. As she gets along in business or profession and provides for her old age she may have a home, a pet or two and if she is very brave she can adopt a baby. The woman who has a home is never to be pitied and it is only on rare occasions that she pities her self. Here is the spot where her feminine instincts may find full expression. She has the pleasure and pride of possession: the satisfaction of peace and privacy; (he joy of having: a place to entertain her friends. Her home is a bank where she puts her surplus. It is an institution that srives her an established position in the community. It is a playhouse where she can cook and sew and grloat over the pretties which have come down to her from her family, as well as those she has bought and paid for. The case of the spinster is pretty good, although she frequently doesn't know it until she has given up the struggle. CAROLINE CHATFIELD. Edenton Personals Mrs. S. X.
