What Caused the Street Fight. ! f 0 of thJ AXD WHERE DOES TIIE MONEY Following is a copy of one ot the, articles that made Mr. Duncan so mad: Observer Bureau, Express Build ing, Raleigh, Aug. 13. North Caro lina Republican politics is coming in for considerable discussion here- aboiiis now. The increased interest, just now being partially due to thej fact that there are a couple or so very desirable positions vacant in the office of the collector of internal rev enue here and Duncan and anti-Duncan forces are eagerly watching the political plays that involve these places and also the manipulation of Republican State politics in general. "The most important vacancy in the collector's office is that of cash ier, made vacant by the death of Wil liam B. Duncan, father of National Committeeman E. C. Duncan. Col lector Wheeler Martin is the closest sort of a personal and political friend of National Committeeman Duncan and was made collector at the in stance of Mr. Duncan. Therefore, just as far as the civil service rules will permit with the most strained construction, it is naturally surmised that supporters of the Duncan inter ests will be given these places in the revenue department. However,, it is pointed out that one or more of those on the eligible list, to whom under the civil service rules these places would go, are in very had standing with National Committeeman Dun can, being regarded as Morehead and State organization men. One of these especially in line is Frederick N. Gat tis, who had a clerkship in the de partment and is charged to have been unfairly cut oft some months ago, when the revenue force was being reduced by order of the department at Washington. The charge is being made now that the vacancies in the revenue office here now are being left open purposely to avoid having to Sive a place to Gattis and some oth ers who are objectionable to Nation al Committeeman Duncan Swinging off on politics of a wider 8cPe, it is being talked here that the national committeeman is laying Plans to have Collector Wheeler Mar tin stand for the State chairmanship against Chairman John Motley More head, and that, in this wav. s-ainine the defeat of Morehead, get a friend ly man in as active State chairman. it is charged that he proposes to use collector Martin mirelv dummy' in his scheme to defeat his arch enemy, Chairman Morehead "On the other hand, it is asserted iaat the most determined sort of Movement is .under way to see to it bonds. One of our subscribers in western Wake has sent us an interesting ac count of a recent conversation be tween a Democrat and a Republican. The conversation is reported as fol lows: Democrat. Do you know what that footway cost across that creek down there? Republican. I heard it cost forty five dollars. Dem. No; it cost forty-eight dol lars and it is made of sap sweetgum and won't last two years. Ren. Then it will last a lot longer than the Democratic promises, for; they won't last two days. Dem. Who paid the bill? Rep. I don't know. I guess that the school board paid it out of some of their six thousand dollar black board bills, etc. Dem. Why did they pay that much for blackboards? Rep. That is what their hooks show up. Dem. Yes, and someone pocketed some of that money, too. Rep. I don't know about that. Do you know how much money there is or the public schools each year? Dem. No. Rep. They get one hundred and hirty thousand dollars, and they pay out thirty thousand of that for the teachers. Dem. And what do they do with the balance? Rep. I don't know. Dem. Yes and someone pockets the balance of that. Rep. I don't know. Dem. I am going to write to D. T. Johnson to have this road worKea from here to my house: a buzzard could hardly fly it. Rep. It is no use to do that, for they won't work it any more till Oc tober, 1912, just before, the election and would not work it then but you see, they want to get elected again and want to fool the people; then they will come along with a plow and about two men to carry their coats and dinner buckets, and they will go over it as fast as they can walk. We will have the chance to vote on a bond Issue soon to work the roads with the Farm Life Schoo Will Some Democrat Please Answer? Editor Caucasian: Take off the label of Visiting Statesmen that you have been applying to Democrats as Jarvis, Craig & Co. as such practition ers I see styled by the independent Democrat press as KJbo and Kibosh, and as the paper has given definition thereof and classified the different practices, I now understand, but one; thing I do not understand, and that is, What is a Democrat in principle and practice of political established principles? Oh, I know they loved the Mason and Dixie line on the Southern side with bills of indict ment against Horace Greely for trea son; so it tne old DiacK Kepuoncan, as they then called him, put his foot across the line they would hang him higher than Haman; and then with these hangings over his head, nomi nated and ran him for President, then for free silver and repudiated that for the gold standard, and every thing else in like manner down to the present day. So what kind of a thing is a Demo cratic principle? If you can't explain, Mr. Editor, Hendersonville, N. C, Aug. 22. i Death and disaster perched on thej seats with a Hendersonville autonio-j bile joy riding party which left herej this morning at 4 o'clock for Spar-; tanburg and which ended with the in-j stant death of the driver of the ma-j chine and the possible fatal injury; of two passengers.
