Sir James E. Southgate, grand comman der. Much advancement has been made during the oast year and more than usual interest is manifested in the Commandry than ever before. Tut: Globe has heard so long grave rumors about opposition to the American Tobacco company, and no v it comes in this wise from the Raltimore Sun : Rernhard Raron, senior member of Baron & Co., cigar and cheroot manu facturers, corner of Hanover and Pratt streets, will leave Baltimore in a few days to superintend the organization of the factory work of the Nitional Cigarette and Tobacco company in New York. Through the efTorts of Mr. Baron the company was recently incorporated in New Jersey. The capital stock is $2, 000,000. The chief object is to compete with the American Tobacco company in the manufacture of cigarettes. The incorporators of the new company which is to compete for this trade in clude, in addition to Mr Baron, who is to be manager, Frank McCoy, president; Sigmund Rosen w ald, of E. Rosen wald fc Brother, vice president, and Emil Seiden burg. of Geo. P. Lies A: Co , secretary and treasurer. The' are all New York tobacco manufacturers. The company has purchased the control of the '.llioit cigarette machine for fifteen years, which is said to be superior to the Bonsack machine, and will be used in the facto ries of the new company. It is said that the American company claimed that the Elliott machine wa3 an infringement of their patents, but a law suit in England w as decided in favor of the Elliott patent. A similar suit is pending in New York, and a similar decision is expected this week. The Elliott machine has been used at the factory of Baron A: Co., in Baltimore, for two months. Mr. Baron says it manu factures t tie cigarette in a manner similar to the hard made cigarette. Richmond fellows, with about fifty or sixty mil lions a month, and North Carolina, with forty or fifty millions. .Mr. Baron will superintend the erec tion of the new factory, which is to be in New York. He expects the factory to be in operation within two months. Three machines are ready to be used, giving a capacity of 300,000 cigarettes per day, but it is expected to open the factory with a capacity of 1,000,000 cigar ettes per day and increase it as rapidly as required.
