all liiuttcr on the farm none is" more
neglected. Bones whole are not avail
able fool for plants; therefore the
farmer takes no interest in them aa a '
means of plant food r.nd they are t,uf
fer( d to lie about the farm unnoticed. I
have practiced dissolving bones in ashes
for many ye-ur.s. 1 collect all the bones,
lar.je and small, all leef and hog bones,
at killing time.
When winter comes and I am burn
ing f:ft)' wood I put in a box or barrel
a ljy-r of u.-d.es f ome two or tliree inches
deep, then a layer of bones (j'ou can
break them with an ax if you wi.sh I
never do), and then another of ashes
aiA then of boms until the vessel ia
nearly full, then fill with ashes. I now
keep this wet with water, being careful
not to put enough to leak through. 1
u. e soap-uds a.s much as 1 can, as it is
b. ttf r. I am careful not to let this mass
fr. z as the process will stop while
fivz-n. I also save through the winter
a hopper of strong ashes in the same
v. ..y it is done for making soap.
When spring comes, if the b'-nes art
not l'; -olvtd sufficiently, I put the bones
;u:d ashes in a large kettle and then
pour on lye leach from this hopper of
a-hes and boil them until they are eaten
up. When done mix it with dry earth
to make it better to handle. Put away
i:i barrels until wanted. I have thus
mad-- a fertilizer that gave better results
than commercial fertilizers for which I
paid three dollars per hundred pounds.
To dissolve bones in sulnhnric neid
much the speediest process, but with!
tiiiS rreat cave ana caution must be oi
s rved, as the acid is very corrosive.
3Iirril"H from Old Cruvrs,
It i-t asserted that the efforts to alolish
infection: diseases, such as rcarlet fever
and diphtheria, are frustrated by the
burial of infected bodies, for though the
microbes themselves may die then
fpsces, or seeds, have very great vitality.
Pasteur's researches have proved that
earthworms bring up to the eurfacc
t::i- robes from the bodies of infected
ni:'uu.i buried several feet deep. Dar
v, i showed in one case that in fifteen
years they had accumulated worm mold
owr three inches in depth, and in an
i' acreage during eighty years had ac
cumulated fcn average depth of more
than a foot.
Ia a field in the Jura, where a diseased
cow had been buried at a depth of nearly
n-V"ii feet, Paste ur found that the mold
which ho collected two years later con
tr.'isied germ's which on being inoculated
in: o a guinea pig produced death from
tb same disorder of which the cow died.
In a Yorkshire village part of a disused

o er f cat let f- ver broke out in the rec

village. It proved to be of the same
t y as that from which, thirty years
b Tore, the victims died who were buried
in that particular part of the churchyard.
On the opening of a" smallpox burying
