DURHA DROWNED IX A WELL Great Kxcitement on Dandy Street Last Sight K('iort That a Child Had Fallen in a Well and Drowned. A DOG WAS THE INNOCENT VICTIM 1 Mplf Who Cumc niul io lirit'f IJiovi titM of Interest to All Headers of The lilobe. There was great excitement Inst night on Dandy street, between 8 ami 0 o'clock, when the news that a child had fallen in the well between the residences of Mrs Couch and Mrs. Lea, who live in a neigh borhood where there are many children, quickly spread over the town. Frightened women and anxious men hastened to the scene, and sought in vain to recognize through the darkness, which the faint light of the lantern failed to penetrate, the familiar form of their neighbor's child the child who had frolicked iu their own homes and been the companion of their own little ones. Parents counted and counted again their own liule families to assure themselves that they were all there, and mothers hugged their babes still closer as they thought of the helpless little one who had met such a cruel fate. An occasional feeble splash in the water below told that life was not yet extinct, and the necessity for immediate action, for doing quick, forced itself upon the crowd which had assembled at the well in a way to make suspense terrible. Chains and buckets were soon gotten in shape and the task of going to the bot tom for the drow ning infant begun, when, what do they tind '. A dog, which is recognized as one be longing to Mr. Cary Markham, is giving a last gasp as they draw him to the fur face, a limp, lifeless and dripping body, no less a victim and no less an object of pity and commiseration because he is a poor brute which has fallen into a trap. The top of the well had been carelessly left open, and the dog, believing it a fence, and trying to leap over it, fell in and that was the end of it. The scare, however, was not without its effect, and people on Dandy street will be more careful how they leave wells uncovered in future.
