A mcin )rr of one of the largest dry goods linn.-, in this country said today, in tTiUing with the president of his bank oer the general business situation: "We are doing a very large business. In fact, one day last week we broke the record in doing the largest business in the history of the house, and this is Niving a good deal." What is true of that house, in a gen eral way, is true of almost every other house in the same line, and is also true f the houses in nearly every other line of trade. Further evidence of this picking up of trade was given at the public sale of silk- goods held yesterday. The sale was made of the products of seven silk mills, some of which are located in this country, and others in France, Italy, and Germany, and it aggregated !00 pieces, or about (S00.000 yards, which hnmjrht in round numbers $500,000, the nverage prices paid being good.
