C, October 24. The legislature of 1S09 gave the cor poration commission supervision over all state, Drivate and savings banks, with power also to appoint bank ex aminers. Ilenry C. Brown is secre tary of the commission, who is one of the best informed men in the state as to all matters pertaining to banks says there were only 04 state banks at the time the commission began its supervision, the total deposits then be ing 9,120.000; capital $4,457,533; total assets S12.S90.000. There are now 22S state banks, with assets amounting to 30,000,000; deposits $22,718,000; capi tal $5,395,530. There are 48 natioaI hanks with assets amounting to $25. 912,S32, and deposits $14,041,405. A bank can now be" chartered by tiling articles of incorporation in the office of the secretarv of state, and the office of the comoratiou commission. Mayor Johnson and Police Justice Badger both say that Charles G. .Smith, who was shot and killed by cue of two other gamblers here last Saturday, Is undoubtedly the man who was before them on a charge of picking pockets here on Thursday, having taken $1.00 from a Confederate veteran. The man gave his name then as G. Smith. . His brother Ed. who denied on Saturday, after the killiuithat Charles G. Smith was the G. Smith in question, is said to have been sitting inside the rail when his brother gave bond. EXTORTIONATE CI I A RGES BY HACKMEX. Mayor Johnson says that he will look into the matter of extortionate charges by hackmeu here during the fair, and that the city unquestionably has juris diction of these, with power to regu late. It is asserted that as much as $2.50 was charged by hackman for tak ing people from the union station to the fair grounds last Thursday. The rule of the corporation commis sion requiring railways to pay freight shippers one dollar a dav for delays in freight shipment has been abrogated. because an act of the last legislature provides that in delays in forwarding carload shipments snail be punished by a penalty of $25.00 for the first 4ay and $5.00 for each subsequent day. Much new machinery is being in stalled in the textile building at the Agricultural and Mechanical college some of this not having been previous ly been seen in this state. The treasurer of the state fair says that between forty thousand and fifty thousand persons entered the grounds and that thfs is a close estimate. A number of visitors to the city that day dd not appear to have gone out to the grounds. The preliminary examination into the killing of the man Smith here last Saturday will be held next Saturday. The attorneys for Clark, the man in jail held for his offense say they will show exactly who did the shooting and it seems that a number of fakirs are to t brought here from the Burlington fair as witnesses. The extreme dryness of the season is shown by the fact that the trees are not taking on the usual rich autumn coloring. This is particularly notice able this year The docket of the supreme court is so light that it will only take a day or two to dispose of it. The dockets at the present term are unusually small in almost every district. WIDER ORGAXIZATIOX OF LABOR. Efforts are to be made by the head of the labor movement in this state. to bring about a wider organization. TThe present one only covers railway machinists, carpenters, brickmasons, barbers, press men, printers, clerks, etc. There is no purpose, for quite a while to come, to organize cotton mill labor, the reason being given that it is too illiterate and that it cannot bo organized to any advantage as yet to itself or to other labor organizations. SHOOTING AT THE UNION DEPOT. The shooting in the thronged Union passenger station by two of the gam bler fakirs who had been at the fair, was the only bad event of last week, and a bullet from one pistol killed a Petersburg gambler-fakir, Charles White. Bob Littleshore, whose home is near Norfolk, is in the police station. His father arrived last night and saw him. The other man, Harry Clark alias Morris, who is from St. Louis, is In jail. His lawyers wanted him plac ed there, so they could see him better There was bad Wood between Clark and Smith, Littlestore now says. It is believed Clark is the man who killed Smith, but the trouble is to prove it. An official says he fears the most that can be done will be to convict these men of carrying pistols. In Texas both would have been lynched in a few minutes. One of the bullets was found yesterday in the ladies' waiting room- State Treasurer Lacy and B. C. He re plied nothing at all, and said no step In this direction had ever been taken. The people generally have taken no interest in the Appalachian forest r fcerves. IMPORTANT HISTORICAL FINDS, Professor E. P. Moses of the Raleigh public schools has returned from; a second visit to Hayes near Eden ton, where he looked over carefully the original papers, also newspapers, etc., of the Johnson family, the home being now owned by the Wood family. He found Cape Fear Mercury of June 20th, 1775, containing the Mecklenburg Resolve of May 31st, 1773, also a let ter about these, in fact two letters, so that if there were any doubt a to those resolves, which of course there is not, this find would settle it. Profes sor Moses is enthusiastic and able in his historical research and is a valuable ally of the State Historical Commis sion, which is showing such zeal and care in bringing out the cariy history of the state. The climate and crop . bulletin orf Septemler for Xorth Carolina appear ed today, showing that the mean tem perature for the state was 71.8 degrees which i3 1.4 above the normal. Glenn was adopted by the council of state: "It is exceedingly difficult to proper ly express in words the worth of one so favorably known as General James D. Glenn, private secretary of the govern or of Xorth Carolina, who died at his home in the city of Raleigh Octoler 1Sth, 1905. The Council of State hon ors his memory for his gentleness, his integrity and his uprightness in life, which endeared him to all our people, and cast a halo around his name that will grow brighter and brighter in the years to come. We thank God for General Glenn and for his valuable ser vices to our state In all the high posi tions he was called to occupy. We thank God for the heroic fight he made tor his life, and that he was manly and unafraid till the burden and heat of the day had passed, and had walked down through the valley of the shadow, and into that darkness which comes to purple and dawn of a better morn ing. We tender to the family, to his aged mother, and to the governor our tend erest sympathy in their bereavement and pray that the consolations of grace may abound in them, and that our heavenly Father may take them Into His inner, chamber and comfort them, as one who is comforted by his mother. That a blank page of the minutes or our council be dedicated to the mem cry of. general Glenn, and a copy of this tribute be sent to his family. J. BRYAN GRIMES, Secretary of State. B.
