Gasoline Bootlegging In North Carolina Reported (OpougMM Rom Rage One.) without paying tike lax .aecordlng to « Mr. Sears of tne gasoline tax division. For under the present law, the manu facturer must report every car of gasoline shipped Into the State, while the railroads must also report every car delievered. Steamship companies must also report all arrivals of tank ers and amount of delieveriea. The State tax of 6 ents a gallon is paid by the manufacturers at the time the >ann ears or tank steamers are un loaded. This leaves only about two possible methods for gasoline bootlegging m North Carolina. I JANUARY 15, 1932 1 of gasoline across the State line from other States In tank wagons. Thg. other is the purchase of be rising naphtha or other products very simi lar to gasoline and (heir sale as gaso line or mixture with gasoline, in or der to reduce the amount of the tax paid. “In other states we have discovered numerous cases in which individual filling station operators have emixed gasoline and* kerosene half and half and softl It as gasoline," said Paul E. Hadlick, of the American Petrolum Institute, who attended the meeting here Thursday. “The operator will buy 1,000 gallons of gasoline upon which th tax has been paid, and then dilute It with 1,000 gallons of kerosene. The average motorist will not know the difference, yet the filling station op erator will make 3 cents a gallon . more profit while the State Will H the 0 cents tax on 1,000 ptflons <ar *6O. > “Indications are that very little of this kind of bootlegging !■ twin* done in North Carolina." Mr. Hadlick said. “But we want to mak sure that none is being done or going to be done. That la why all the leading oil and gasoline refining coaipanlea are or ganising to cooperate with the various States to help them find the gasoline bootleggers and bring them to Justice. We fel that since atl the big gasoline refiners pay their taxs and abide by the laws, that all the filling station operators should do the same."
